Ideas on how to secure Sub-Enclosure

We drive a car that was meant to be tossed around, which isn't really compatible with having a sub in the trunk (especially one that is loosely secured). I currently have it secured via a single metal wire/cable which I have looped around the rear-folding seat latch which works okay but I'm looking for a more secure (yet easily removable) solution.

I can picture my new solution in my head but I'm not sure where to get these parts. In my head I'm picturing these two short metal tubes that expand when you you twist (similar to some of those pullup-bars you install in your doorway).

Can somebody help me brainstorm with what the red parts below can actually be? (something cheap I can readily pick up from a Home Depot or Lowes would be the perfect solution).

I have been fabricating for many years, and I will tell you that I am not sure that what you are trying to do in the above diagram will work to adequately hold the enclosure in place without some Velcro or similar on the bottom of the box to add friction, but it is worth a shot.

The first thing that comes to mind that does what you are trying to do is a shower or curtain rod but those are too long and the spring action doesn't apply enough force. Next I would think that an adjustable bar with spring tab stops like those found at the base of crutches or canes would be great except that the stop hole would have to be almost exact to get the correct pressure and you would also probably need a rubber foot on both ends, so something like this would need to be heavily modified after purchase.

So the only thing that really comes to mind that would work straight out of the package that you can get at Home Depot or Lowes are bar clamps that can be reversed and used as spreaders. There are many brands out there that make this style of clamp but Irwin is the one that Home Depot carries and I think that they might have ones that are small enough to fit in that tight of a vertical space. If you do not like the blue clamp with yellow writing I suppose you could always remove the label and paint them. While this solution would work out the purpose of your above diagram, it could be seen as tacky or corner cutting, and I will tell you that there are better ways of fastening a box temporarily but they require custom fabricated brackets and various hardware.

i was thinking the exact same thing as OP. currently thinking about making a base that sits on the floor and conforms to the wheel wells and screw sub box to. i will try fabbing something up tonight. if it works i will post pics

Well, that was relatively easy. I stopped by Home Depot and picked up the following parts: (4) rigid coupling threaded 3/4" and (2) rigid conduit nipples 3/4" x 2".




The final install is a bit ghetto-ish, but I can continue to improve how it looks. It is right at the top of the trunk area/rear deck so it will be out of sight most of the time.

Total cost about $8 after I return two of the parts.

That is actually not too bad. Good idea in fact. My box is currently just floating around back there, and it certaintly isnt hurting anything by moving a little on hard corners.

But, I plan on grabbing one of @Integrity Concepts boxes in the next 10 days or so. So I wont have to worry about it.

My sub kit came with two straps. They are secured to the trunk liner via short screws. The straps loop around the sub box and tightened similar to a belt with saw teeth.

i used two straps that hook to the lower child seat anchor and wrap around rear of box and hook to the holes on the top of the trunk, not super rigid but have done the hooning test and it didnt really move.

so are they just held by the compression of spin lengthening the nipples or am i missing something else

No, that's about it. I have since added rubber feet to the threads to dampen any additional shock to the rear deck and moved it over to the passenger side to balance the car out a little bit more. Here's a better picture of how it looks like now.

That's actually not a bad idea. I was going to suggest a jack and 2x4, but this is cheaper and looks better!

I used industrial strength velcro and have had zero issues. It is also easier to remove the box if I want to lose some weight

Is the velcro just screwed into floor board?

I have two pieces attached to the carpet and two pieces attached to the sub and even when I take really aggressive turns, the sub does not move. No screws, just the glue that comes on the back of the velcro.

I found it at Lowes. It says something like Industrial Strength x2 on the package.
