My guess is that DOT approval only matters in two scenarios:

A) Getting pulled over for something and getting a secondary on your tails (possibly getting pulled over as a primary if they are too smoked/tinted)

B) Getting into an accident where you are rear ended and a smart lawyer/insurance company inquiring if you had after market lights that weren't DOT approved
