FRS- Borla Exhaust Claim
Just got my new FR-S, reminds me so much of my previous 280z. Looking to put a catback on it - decided on either a Borla catback or a Perrin system. Even though there is a great collection of exhaust clips, still hard to compare apples to apples. Want a good deep sound, limited drone, not rapsy or overly loud.
One thing promoted on the Borla system is that there is a +4-6 HP/TQ increase at 4700RPM instead of all these other exhaust systems that promote their gains at 7000RPM. I was wondering if there is anyone in the Houston Texas area with either of these systems on their cars that I could listen too? |

I'm in the same boat as you. All manufacturer's seem to over estimate their gains (probably use the best run with their product installed, and the worst stock run). It is interesting that Borla noted the 4.7K RPM in their claims. That is appealing to me as my car is my daily driver.

Borla
same here, mine is a daily driver, not a track car. I wont be going 7000RPM very often, but a 5K pipe sounds very appealing.
I found several videos on another FR-S forum site showing quite a bit of Borla clips. It seems a lot louder than I am looking for. Have you heard one in person. |

Catbacks don't do diddily on their own on this car.
Given enough dyno runs, I can cherry-pick a couple that make it look like farting in the general direction of your intake increases power 5hp -- dynos just aren't that accurate or consistent. Even if it did make power, you won't notice a measly 4-6hp anyway. So just pick the exhaust that has a sound that you like and a price that you're willing to pay. |

borla
actually agree. Sound is the key, it was interesting on the Borla claim. Just want a deep tone, not rapsy, no/limited drone and fairly quiet. There are way too many systems out there that sound like a bunch of hornets. I perfer the look of the split instead of the under the trunk muffler. Suggestions?
It would really be nice to get rid of that torque dip without having to go supercharger/turbo route. Getting rid of that would be noticeable |

The way companies figure HP is a joke. They find the spike that makes the most HP and use that as "peak HP"
Average gain is not much... Sound and weight reduction is what to look at. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta |

I think the borla sounds good. I'm running a catless front pipe and wonder how the borla would sound without resonators?

There is a noticeable difference in power gains as well. You can feel it right off the line, and right around 4k the exhaust really comes alive! Not too loud though. During normal driving conditions you can barely hear it. I've seen all the Borla FRS video's on youtube and they don't do this exhaust system justice. Get it and you won't regret it! Couple it with an intake and you'll see even better performance gains |

I just recently installed a borla catback on my new FRS. My FRS isn't broken in yet so I dont go much above 4000 rpm, but the borla sounds pretty good. No drone at cruising and she really wakes up during acceleration. I do think this exhaust might be a bit on the quieter side but like I said, I haven't gone much above 4000rpm yet and that leaves a lot of rpm range that I haven't heard. I think the acceleration felt more peppy after the install. The install was really simple. All said and done, I'm glad I got the borla catback and the borla exhaust diffuser. I just wish they made a catted uel header....

In a reply by Borla:
"Usually we do not release our dyno results as they can be very subjective. I would say the numbers you have quoted would be fairly accurate to expect. The sound of this system is as you have described, aggressive while not obnoxious and a nice low throaty tone without drone. All of our mufflers are a straight through design we do not use chambers as they restrict the exhaust flow and hinder performance." They stated that they did design this system for mid-range improvements more than high RPM ranges. |
