61k Paint code varience
Thought I'd share. I do auto body for a profession at custom classics in island lake, IL. Just so you all know Asphalt Grey from the FR-S and Dark Grey from the BRZ, although they have the same paint code, the Tint and flake in them is totally different. 61k via toyota has a much heavier tint of blue and the metallic flake does not match that of a BRZ. I found this out while repairing my own FR-S. The car did not have a paint code tag on it and looking at paint chips thru the standox book we found a subaru color that was similar. Looking up the paint code we found that it was 61k which is what the 3 subaru chips had on them, but non of the variences matched. Looking further into the chip book we found a toyota 61k. Only one varience in it and it matched perfect. So just for a heads up for any of you looking to trade deck lids, or front covers. They may not match that great.

Good to know. Wonder if this is just for the asphalt, or if it's possibly the same with the other colors?

Interesting, I assumed since they all roll off the same plant they would use the same paint for cost savings.

There's variance in the black, too. The Subarus that are made in Japan (WRX/BRZ at least) have blue in the mica/metallic. The ones made in Indiana (B9, Legacy) don't - it's just silvery particles.
Both have the same paint codes - D4S. Last edited by Admiral Ballsy; 07-23-2013 at 10:42 PM. |

I see. I'm concerned because I ordered a shark fin antenna in Asphalt 61k lol, I hope it matches my DGM.

The paint chips are for a brz from Subaru. It's says right on them. Not assuming.

My first BRZ got rear-ended, and the repair was done with the Subaru paint code for BRZ CBS. And it didn't match. Notice that I'm not saying you're wrong - you may be right. But you can't be sure until you see the two cars side-by-side. |

Subaru paint is notoriously hard to match. The flake varies from batch to batch and some of the more complex colors will vary in color as well. The white pearls are the worst, and surprisingly World Rally Blue is difficult to match as well.

I'll just keep my mouth shut next time, being a professional and all apparently doesn't matter on forums. Somebody else always knows best! ;-)

I worked for GM in the '90s, in a paint operation no less - a bit closer to the source, I'd say - and I'd never claim to have any 'special knowledge' about how paint samples are made. But I do know they weren't terribly consistent. Consider this: The Japanese in particular are known for wringing out every last drop of efficiency, particularly in operations. You are suggesting that they are building the same car, in the same plant, using two different paint formulations that are so similar they can't be distinguished except in direct comparison. Further, you're suggesting that based upon the comparison of a paint chip. Ever heard of Occam's Razor? |

Mine should arrive in 7 days. Hopefully the fit and finish is decent. I really do hate the look of the current antenna.

Was the exact same mix and ppg number in my ppg hp envirobase system. I sprayed parts for my asphalt and color is dead on. Weird that its different in your system.
