Had a 07 Cobalt SS with the GM Performance stage two injectors, a custom under drive pulley and a tune. That thing would walk same model year Mustang GTs and GTOs while getting 35 mpg. It had never failed me or given me any problems. Was a good solid car. I like my BRZ better but the Cobalt was way faster hands down.

Hi guys

Mind if I sit in on this slugfest? I like reading about how ugly and slow my car is.

So who's got that brz/FT86/FRS with the exhaust, intake, tune that would give him an edge over the cobalt on the track? I think I read that right.

The comment was me, and I said intake exhaust and tune would give it an edge over a stock SS or even an SS with the same basic mods. Especially on curvier tracks.

If I dumped the amount of aftermarket money you spent on that Cobalt into my BRZ, I don't think it would be even around a circuit.

And I respect your car, but it's still ugly to my eye. Personal preference I suppose... Sorry

Judging by the pics and dyno I'm guessing that there wasn't all that much money dumped into that Cobalt. Im guessing just an intake and tune?

Nah, stock 06/07 Cobalt SS S/C will only float around 200hp on a dynojet, and 220ish with intake and exhaust and a decent tune, as far as I'm aware. That has had some work done (to some extent).

K&N intake = $235
ZZP upper CP = $199
Treadstone IC = $299
Forge BPV = $150
HPtune = $199
TWM STS = $200
CAI DP = $250
Retros = $300
R1C rotors + Pads = $520

Total of $2352 not including shipping costs.

Now how much of that actually went into making those dyno numbers? $684. The rest is cosmetic.

stock cobalt turbos on average Dyno ~240hp, 255 trq.

If you can make 57 hp and 72 trq on $684, then I will be impressed. But thats not happening on an intake, exhaust and tune. Your also not gonna find an intake, exhaust, and tune for that low amount of cash. I'd guess you guys are probably looking around $1400 -1600 being a new platform and all?

As for handling. Some of you seem to understand probably either by personal experience or just plain understanding the data. Turbo cobalts has pretty impressive handling from factory. GM performance tuned the suspension on the Nurburgring.

There are plenty of members that autocross/track their car and I can definately pull up some strong evidence that it really will take a turbo and some fat tires to make the frs competitive with a crappy FWD car. Oh and to get one thing straight I agree with you guys, FWD is not better than RWD so theres no arguement to fight there, get over it.

nobody is talking about the 06/07 cobalt (well they are but that isnt the car that brought this thread up) the t/c cobalt has 260 hp/ 260tq stock and handles much better than the s/c version as well. its entirely within reason to see that kind of gain from a tune, intake and exhaust on the t/c car (i think)

correct. The time this dyno was done, I had an intake, downpipe, Forge BPV, and a tune.

The tune had some timing advance and the boost setting was set to 20psi. This tune gave me some long term trouble and I had the tuner retune. Basically the wastegate immediately closed as you touched the throttle and the car was not very daily driveable at all.

The new tune is set to 24 psi and I had him torque limit 1st gear and slowly ramp the boost with RPM so the car behaved better for Daily driving. Still basically an on/ off switch around 70% throttle though. Car makes more torque and power now, no dyno to prove it but the clutch wont hold it anymore. Stock clutch was rated 320 trq. If I had to guess Im where everyone else is with the similar bolt ons. ~320ish whp and 360ish trq.

Blow off valves / By pass valves are completely cosmetic on a stock turbo.

Yeah I also drive a Neon SRT-4 ACR so I'm pretty familiar with these cars and what they're capable of

Yep exactly like that.

The disadvantage for FWD is definately traction.. anything after 300whp requires traction mods like crazy to even stay competitive.

Thats where you other guys can talk about how much money we've thrown at our FWD crapboxes just to keep up.
