There is a bit of gear rattle in these cars in first and second gear. It is nothing as bad as the noise my previous '02 Ford Focus.

If you lug the engines in first or second and accelerate you can hear the noise in my car. I would say it is nothing to worry about.

BTW, try not to rest your hand on the shifter, it could cause the shift forks to wear on the slider that engages gears internally. I do a little track driving instruction and a surprising amount of people hold on to the shifter.

Hey guys I'm experiencing the same problem as stated above. It's weird to describe, it's like a rattle or something is muffled or loose in the engine bay around 2-3k rpm. The only difference between me and the rest of you is that I drive an automatic.... What could be causing this sound? Just to reiterate, it only happens in low gears at low rpm. And it's on a lite load. I'm still trying to properly break in my new ride. Thanks

this is normal, low RPMs and low speed in 2nd gear, nothing to worry about. Had this noise in many of my previous MT cars.

Really? I picked my car up 4 days ago, and have heard a slight "metallic rattle sound" coming from what sounds like under the hood, on the drivers side.. (Right Hand Drive in Australia) It happens during acceleration from approximately 2,500 - 4,000 revs..

My last couple of Manuals did not make this noise?
Should i be worried?
Any1 had the same problem and found a fix?

I have this similar sound as well. i recently installed catless front pipe and thinking it causes this. I thought nut or bolt got lose on either overpipe to front pipe or front pipe to exhaust pipe section. I havent lift up my car to check it out to inspect bolts and nuts but i doubt it. if it got lose then i would hear loud tank sound from car or exhaust leak sound. regardless i am going to lift up my car this weekend and see everything is tight and secure.

Three or four possible issues:

For most, you're hearing the clutch rattle. I'm not sure what causes it but a quick search reveals almost every 6MT car has this at low RPM's and it goes away when you push the clutch in. I've noticed these engines are really shakey at 1700 - 1850 rpm as well.

For the very few others, it could be the shifter linkage, high pressure fuel pump, or loose undercarriage parts (exhaust etc etc). This is quite unlikely, but should still be considered.

Finally, it could be engine knock. There's about a 0.01% chance that's the case though and it would make that noise under load in every gear at low rpm. If you've heard a bad motor in the past, you'd know this in an instant.

I have notice the idle speed varies when I am sitting still for a bit, in neutral. Almost like it is thinking about stalling, but it doesn't.

Something else to check that caused a similar sound in mine is a loose rear axle. The mounting bolts on mine where not properly installed causing them to come loose. Kinda sounded like someone tapping something with a metal hammer but only a few times and went away as soon as I got on the gas.

Finally I found something similar. Mine happens at a little bit higher rpm, light load. Just like a truck...
Lots of people told me it's normal. But it's just annoying because my roommate's frs doesn't make that sound.

Here is my post with videos:

I recently am having a issue with a rattling noise as well but for me it's only on first gear.

Sounds like it's coming from the rear/middle of the car.

The noise is from the transmission, not the reverse lock. It happens when traveling slowly at a load level that is almost lugging the engine.

I hope this noise doesn't become another BS warranty thing like what happened to the V160.... I'm sure that made Toyota upset.

Ishii

if it's the same clanging noise I hear when loading the engine in 2nd gear at low rpm, I've been told it's just resonance of the dual mass flywheel. There's springs in it that have a resonant frequency around 1500 - 1800 rpm in second gear with load on the engine. Engine braking in 2nd gear at low rpm will also make the noise.

Anyone have a sound clip so I can compare it to the sounds I'm hearing ?

I mean the car still drives normally and notice nothing wrong at all, it's just that noise I can't quite put my finger on
