Or when driving through long dark tunnels.

That's the one I was thinking of. I installed CCFL halos on my E46, which ran great in the summer and took up to 45 minutes to warm up turn on in the winter. They were a real pain in the ass.

I just want to know if there's some way to retrofit the boomerang to burn brighter (especially without baking it). CCFL might actually work well in that application since it's better insulated, from my experience it's the inverters that crap out first, though.

Just change your nav screen setting to the time of the day. Its one of the options. The other option is when your headlights turn on the screen dims.

Does anyone know how to make the led bar (near the fogs) turn on at night while the headlights are on? This would really complete the look of the brz.

CCFL is an old technology that was never really supposed to be used in cars and was replaced by LEDs in the aftermarket due to constant failures/fires. Ever wonder what was used to light up the old E39/E60 5 series halos? Incandescent bulbs.

Want to know what's used in the BRZ's "boomerang?" LEDs.

Until someone figures out a way to replace the PCB/ribbon that holds the LEDs inside the headlight housing, we will not have an easily replaceable/upgradeable boomerang.

The "boomerang" hawkeyes are not as bright as the DRL's, thus the reason why they are not used as DRL's.

I'm just waiting for the first person to bake apart their headlights and dissect it.

@Jive Turkey has already separated his BRZ headlights to paint them black.

What a waste of the boomerangs to not have them on with DRLs.

I wonder if there's a way to increase the voltage or something like that to the DRLs to make them shine brighter... or do LEDs not work that way? Not a electrical engineer unfortunately

It'd be interesting to see if we can increase the intensity of the light output..

Excessive voltage to a diode causes catastrophic failure. Hit your local Rat Shack, purchase a 5V LED, and connect it to a 9V battery. You'll be an electrical engineer in no time. Just wear safety glasses in case it explodes.

I would also like to have my boomerang and led drls on all the time with back, side and headlights automatically come on when dark.

LEDs are regulated by both voltage and current. What you don't want to do is increase voltage blindly. LEDs can be operated somewhat out of spec, but the right way to increase/decrease brightness is (someone can correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm just a regular ol' mechanical engineer that dabbles in electrical stuff on the side) with a PWM (pulse width modulator), which would control the duration that current goes to the LED(s) and pulses the current rapidly.

^ So the LEDs use some sort of PW modulation when running? That would certainly explain why on videos you can see them blinking rapidly on occasion.

The use of PWMs is a digital way of achieving an analog effect, at least on computer fans - it can be used to reduce the RPM of a fan to any level. It has the net effect of a variable voltage reduction resistor, turning the fan motor on/off rapidly to maintain a set speed.

I was messing around with my head unit and found that if you go to info, settings, then scroll down to auto dimming and place it on manual or on the clock time. The gps doesn't go to night mode and the head unit as well as all the other interior lights do not dim.
