No offense, but I am confused as to why you would be "amazed" when the apparent cause (ethanol) isn't available in the fuel you use. Seems pretty straight forward.

This sounds like one of the best pieces of evidence in support of the "It's the ethanol, stupid." argument. My reading of the U.S. ethanol/no ethanol posts is that there is a lot of contradictory evidence. But if all Oz is posting that they have no crickets, and Oz is an almost ethanol-free environment, that tells me something.

Do you know if Hawaii gets "summer" gas? For myself I've noticed my car is chirping less for the past month or so. Still on the original pump from June 2012

Japan has some high octane fuels Japan uses 89 and 96 RON and US gasoline is usually equivalent to 92 RON and the max in the U.S. is like 95 RON, and Super plus or premium like fuel there can be 100 octane which they sell sometimes as "high octane" on labels and what not. I don't remember hopefully someone else can clarify this better, but I'm pretty sure Japan has higher octane fuel and no ethanol.

I don't know if there is "summer" gas here. My original pump didn't have chirp from 8k miles to 10k miles. Maybe you're going into that stage too soon.

My mileage is almost 7k now so that's about right.

In Japan, regular = 90-91 and high octane = 100.

BUT

How they measure is different from how U.S. measures.
U.S. 87 is similar to JP 91
U.S. 89 is similar to JP 95
U.S. 91-93 is similar to JP 98-100

So, if you look at their numbers and our numbers, it looks like their gas have higher octanes, but they really aren't.

Crickets are popular pets and are considered good luck in some countries.
In China crickets are sometimes kept in cages.

I'll keep mine for now as they aren't hurting the FR-S.

They are the same as yours.
As I understand it we use RON and you use AKI and these are the equivalents.

AKI 87 = RON 91
AKI 91 = RON 95
AKI 93 = RON 98

I've only ever seen E5, might have ben E10? once and that was in Tasmania and i'm sure it was 91octane[RON]

I've never heard crickets mentioned in Japan and I don't think they use ethanol much there either.

I'm amazed at that high percentage of cars being affected, not the cause.
You would have thought they would have modified the pump to suit ethanol after a year and all those pumps being chucked in the bin?

I think I reported my case earlier in this thread, but here is an update.
FR-S MT
Starting getting the crickets at 1.7k miles. Currently @ 3.2k miles. Cricket was exactly as most described, only appearing after engine is warmed up, and only during idle. It was pretty loud, I could hear it on the street with my windows rolled up.
I got an oil change on Wednesday, 2 days ago, but a trusted mechanic. Bosch filter, mobil1 0w-20.
The noise has ceased to exist since I got this oil change.
California 91 octane.
