Electric fuel pump is in the tank, high pressure mechanical fuel pump is under the hood.

Please take a service manual and/or diagrams with you when you talk to these two people and show them that the High Pressure Fuel Pump is located in the engine bay, on the driver's side. There is a pump by the tank, to my knowledge, but it is not the focus of the chrips.

Neither of these guys have ever worked on an FR-S, obviously.

Yea also known as the injector fuel pump. The normal fuel pump in the tank pushes the fuel the length of the car, the HPFP then gets it up to the pressure required for the injection system. If you have ever heard an old inductor or dewatering pump it basically makes that sounds just at a much higher frequency. they should just wrap it in dynomat lol

Mine chirps, don't care. When there is a fix, I'll get it fixed. Meantime, e-free gas.

Hmmmm. Has anyone tried acoustically insulating the pump? I wonder if a wrap or enclosure would cause the pump to over heat?

went to have mine repaired for a second time and they told me that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are working to fix it and not to repair mine.

I had the cricket for a while now and taking it in this Friday to get it replaced. The chirp seem to be getting louder so needless to say I've been listening closely for that noise lately. Tonight when I pulled into my garage I heard the chirping again, only this time it was much louder and a different interval. So I popped my hood for a closer listen, but figured out the sound was way too much on the passenger side to be the fuel pump. Only then did I realize it was a real cricket on my garage floor Toyota could have picked a better animal sound for our engines to imitate...

I would have to disagree.
As I mentioned earlier, I have been using Shell 91 V-Power with no ethanol since day one and I have had crickets. There are also comments from others using e-free that they have crickets too.
But mine are not always there, but usually on hot days after lots of driving.

So either some of the Shell stations I go to are BS'ing about the no ethanol OR it is an intermittent issue that comes and goes so people are thinking no ethanol works.

Fair enough, maybe I spoke out of turn, I didn't see that there were some people using ethanol-free on every fill up and still getting the chirps. I started putting ethanol-free in my car and haven't had a single chirp in thousands of miles. Temperatures here have been getting up to 105* in the afternoon on my long drive home.

I have been running E0 for over 4k miles now with no chirps. One day I was low on gas and had to put some ethanol gas in so I could make it to the E0 pump.

Chirps came back the second I started my car after putting in the ethanol gas.

Later that day after I had burned that gas away and it was running on the E0 gas the crickets were gone.

Its the ethanol dude.

Shell is BSing you.

As posted in the other chirping thread, I thought this would help anyone who's dealer is giving them problems.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting article on MotorTrend's long-term BRZ in the August 2013 issue.

" Over the past few months the BRZ had been making an irritating noise, most noticeable at idle with the windows down... the noise was a continuous small squeaking or chirping- a cricket held up to a microphone."

" After describing the noise, the manager hesitated only for a second before saying, " it's the fuel pump.""

Do some of you not understand that the pump itself is either poorly designed of has some defect that causes the chirp? Until the re-design or permanent fix, odds are your pump will chirp, no matter how many you try.
