Well, if you upgrade to a next-gen console you will have to pay either way to play online. And now both will have a Blu-Ray player in them.

We live in an advertisement-driven world. You really can't go anywhere, watch anything, listen to anything, play anything, or walk down the street without being hit by ads, product placement, and other ways of directing attention to certain products. Microsoft is certainly not the only company that does this and there are plenty of ads on PSN as well. Besides, almost all ads on either console are for content available ON that console. Games, music, movies, tv shows... those are all available through respective marketplaces. It would be like complaining that the iTunes library is littered with music "ads."

Sponsorship pays. Even giants sell ad space. It's nothing to lose sleep over, IMO.

I'm not losing sleep over it. I just think if they're targeting tons of ad revenue they should lower subscription costs since not everyone knows to get a XBL 12+1 card when they go on sale for 30 bucks, and not raise them like they did a couple years back. Or get rid of them altogether, or not require them for non-gaming programs, etc. Of course that's not realistic, why would you cut the head off a cash cow? But I'm not the only one out there that thinks it's stupid to pay for it.

Especially since with PS4, Sony is making you pay anyway. You can grumble about the details all you want but business is business. Your dollars are the bottom line to either of these companies. To believe somehow one is more "for the people" than other is naive. Sony in particular have decades of history screwing people with proprietary features and accessories, among other things. MS has had more or less a monopoly on the computing world. Both want your money and will do just about anything to get it.

For multiplayer, yes. For Netflix, Hulu, etc, no. That's the biggest gripe I have with Xbox Live. I get that it costs money to build and support the infrastructure for online gaming, but all of these other things are apps that a Roku or even any smart tv has built in now, for the most part.

I'm actually surprised it took Sony this long to start charging for multiplayer access. I've expected it for years now and was surprised it wasn't part of PS+ when that initially launched. They're just now trying to build up what Microsoft has had for several years.

Unless I wanted to buy all new sets of memory cards, I was pretty much "stuck" with Sony Cybershot cameras for most of the early 2000s. Not that they were bad cameras or anything, but this is back when flash memory was still stupid expensive and replacing my 3 or 4 memory sticks would cost nearly as much as a whole camera anyway....

Dunno why they don't include neflix and hulu, but they never have. To be honest, I'm not sure I know anyone who even has a silver account unless they never use their xbox at all. To me, it was just kind of a given that you had Gold, especially since most of my gaming is online shooters.

But as you said, most modern TVs have it built in (including mine that I got last year for my living room), so it's pretty much redundant and moot to have it through my console. lol.

I hear that! This $99 32GB proprietary Vita memory card bs is fucking me up my ass... someone needs to release the exploits for this system to open it up already I'm tired of Sony bullshitting with this system that took me 1 1/2 days of work to buy.
