Any car can be made fast with enough time and $$$$. But I could care less about 450hp and FWD. That era of Civics and Integras running huge turbos was fun when it lasted. But I am personally beyond that. I don't need a fast car. I do need a fun car that puts a smile on my face. The tC and other cars like that would never do it for me. No matter how big the turbo, how strong/good an engine, or how big the wing. Just not my flavor. What about others? Sure there will be many in the tC scene. But for many of us the FRS is what we have been waiting for in a car. We would never have considered a tC in the first place. But the tC will continue to have its followers even with the FRS in the same lineup.

RX-8.
But DrunkenMime was saying the RX-8 isn't and gave no reason. So I added a reason consistent with his statement. Purists will say a sports car cannot have a radio, leather, or anything unnecessary that doesn't help performance. Ferrari built and sold road cars to fund Team Ferrari's sports cars. In general, road cars may include grand tourers, roadsters, hyper cars, super cars, and exotics all built to be sold. Even if they possess insane performance ability, it will never be as good as a sports car built solely to perform (not to be sold). You need to draw the definition line somewhere and that is the only place it can most clearly be drawn. It's either a sports car or it isn't. Here are some "sports cars" off the top of my head. Monster Sport SX4 Hill Climb Special Toyota GT-One SARD MR2 TRD Formula Atlantic Celica GT-Four WRC WedsSport Celica BRZ GT300 That's my interpretation of the hardcore purist's view but I'm not a purist. I believe even affordable road cars are sports cars if their design incorporates some serious sporting elements.

^Exactly. Racing is a sport hence race cars built for racing (not for the road) are sports cars. BUT...
You missed my point. I was playing Devil's Advocate taking DrunkenMime's statement into a fully developed argument. Basically, I'm disagreeing with when he says RX-8 is not a sports car.

This thread motivated me to look at the specs of the tC. Nice engine (180 hp/173 tq). Don't see why it couldn't have been massaged a little and dropped into the FRS. I would have been willing to give up a little of the much-touted low CofG for that torque number.
Hey, Toyota ---> ![]() On Topic: Why does the tC have to be irrelevant? I say: the more cars, the better. |
