Math. Heh.
So you can never have a theory that actually describes everything; What we can know is limited to what we can observe. Physics essentially tries to attach mathematical structures to real world things so we can say things about their properties using math. About your electromagnetism example: So you have your particle theory of light, and your wave theory of light. If you only care about your wave properties, then you treat light as waves and work with that. If you only care about the particle like properties, you treat it as particles and work off that. If you need both, then you'll need to pull that quantum field theory stuff. The more properties you can describe with a single "object" the more power you have to say things. Hopefully that was an illustrative example of the philosophy of math (and the highly mathematical sciences). |

I gotcha. yes, no theory of everything required, but more and more you know and understand, easier it is to predict outcomes. in more ways than one imo
love this random quote btw: "I like to think the moon is there, even when i'm not looking at it." ae Quote:

specifically, I like to figure out "clocks."

I am currently trying to learn about escapements and balances. There is a shit-ton of math and physics involved as well as rather complex metallurgy.

Your watch operates on a lever escapement with a sprung balance wheel. The El Primero (although it should really be Spanish for 'The Third', heh...) operates at 10 beats per second, each beat is accomplished by a lever with two pallet jewels that alternates between locking and letting go a toothed wheel that drives the gear train of your watch. 5 locks and 5 impulses per second. It is timed and controlled by a spring attached to a balance wheel that must oscillate back and forth at ~3/4 revolution per beat of the watch. This is the same purpose as a clock's pendulum, except at higher frequency. The difficulty is that everything (gravity, temp, friction, magnetic fields) can affect it, creating inconsistencies and screwing up accurate time keeping. Or something along those lines. I'm still working on my comprehension...

thank you. 36k beats per hour. I love my chrono, far superior than the mainstream branded version "rolex" daytona...I prefer the Zenith.
on your point about gravity etc affecting the movement.. that's why the real enthusiasts there love the Tourbillon's no? ~ im a layman with Tourbillon tho so please correct me if im wrong...Quote:

Maybe something like JLC's multiple axis Gyro-Tourbillon would be better for a wristwatch, but we are now talking ob$cene amounts of money. Make your Zenith look like my Seiko 6139-6005 (the real 'El Primero') in comparison. Heh... But getting back to the physics, the gyro tourby is trying to balance out variables, whereas materials improvements like silicium and Parachrome (*TM, Rolex always trying to be 'special', sigh...) are trying to negate or reduce the effects of the variables.

Question to @Luis_GT and @Bignicky1: Why does a civil engineer hate physics? I thought in this field there are a lot of stuff are related to physics and mechanics. If you are in this field, why would you hate physics?
To @supra2nv, physics is like observing the nature to see how things works/move/behave. One uses theories to describe the nature and uses formula/equations/math to describe it quantitatively. As to your saying about *hacking* nature, that is the ingenious people who observe the nature and manipulate/produce/engineer effects or products by following the physics of nature to achieve what they desire. When you observe and describe nature, you are looking at the phenomenon as a physicist. When you are describing the nature using formula and equations with numbers, you are acting as a mathematician. When you are utilizing the nature to produce the effect or generate products, you are an engineer. As an engineer, I would say God is the greatest engineer to create the universe, assuming he did create the universe in the first place (just to be politically correct....).
