I agree that a turbo is the easiest way to make power... I highly doubt it's smooth or as easy to handle on the track as a s/c or na car though.
Its as smooth as you want it to be with a very linear power curve thanks to the GTX28 turbo. Trust me everything works very well mostly do to who tuned this car.

You don't add an up-pipe or downpipe. The turbo mounts behind the engine where the stock 2nd cat sits. The stock header/primary cat is retained.

would you throw a cel with not cat in the header?

You will if you don't run a spacer or tune the CEL out. The stock sensor picks up more flow from the header and throws a code reading it running rich I believe. It really kills your AFR balance at that point to continue to drive with the CEL on. Highly advise getting a tune with a catless header over the spacer. Not only will you increase performance, you get increased MPG's too when you aren't stomping on the gas.

I had two stock o2 sensors burn out on my Camaro SS with longtube headers because of the increased flow on them. Swapped to some aftermarket Bosch replacements and they work like a charm. It will be interesting to see how the stock o2's handle the flow over the years.

Why would someone pay the price for forged internals and then go redneck on the turbo setup???

A. that config was the first turbo kit released to the public so if he bought it way back when the car was first released, he literally had no choice
B. he wanted to retain factory cat and header for a reason like emissions or stock header design
C. he wanted to have the added weight be towards the center of the car and not the front for weight balance purposes
D. he didn't want a hot turbo sitting in the engine bay emitting heat on everything in there

Until his incident with the cat falling apart we had not seen any incidence of a cat failing on this platform. Now we know.

I hear a lot of people bashing the Borla UEL headers, for the new and improved batches is the welding better, quality wise and what not improved? Would anyone recommend such a purchase?

I wouldn't get the Borla Headers. I would look at the JDL headers or MXP headers

O2 spacers and mini-cats are just as effective as a tune and they cost hundreds less. The primary purpose of the secondary O2 sensor (narrow-band) is to monitor catalyst efficiency. When the cat is removed the sensor sees more oxygen than it would with a cat so all you need to do is reduce the volume of exhaust gas it sees. Angled spacers with restricted orifices work very well as do "mini-cats".

Closed loop AFR is controlled primarily by the primary O2 sensor (wide-band) and is unaffected by the secondary O2 sensor. Even with a P0420 CEL your AFR will remain unchanged from the target lambda 1.0 (stoich, 14.7:1). Fuel economy is unlikely to ever improve from an aftermarket tune although performance will.

I suspect it more likely that those O2 sensor failed due to increased temp rather than increased gas flow. Bosch makes great O2 sensors but our Denso's are excellent as well. I did have to replace a Denso wide-band on my 08 XB after I turbocharged it but it was fouled during tuning. The replacement Denso lasted over 50k miles and was still 100% when I traded the car in on my FRS.
