No self-serve allowed in Oregon, a law I like.

I like to serve my own fuel... that way I don't have to worry about someone scratching my car or spilling fuel on it...

Maybe if I lived in the tropics it wouldn't matter as much. But pumping gas in pouring 40°F rain and then climbing back into the car with hands and shoes smelling like gas will quickly change your mind. And I have my Chevron guys well trained, know them all and a little respect goes a long way toward a careful pit stop.

Wimp. Filling up in single-digit temperatures and lake-effect snow is what turns boys into men

Also, not sure how well-maintained your gas stations are out there, but rarely to I re-enter my car smelling like gasoline, let alone stepping in it.

Well... then your gas station sucks... cause the gas station near my house has turned into a hangout spot due to the large selection of beers... and it never smells like gas...

Beer? My gas station only has three brews, all unleaded.

And after surviving New England winters and gas nozzles nearly freezing to my hand, I'm grateful for the Oregon full-serve only law.

Don't know how our gas station maintenance compares to other states, they all look about the same to me. Also, OR gas is much less than WA gas two miles away due to a lower tax bite, so no price penalty for having someone else smell like an IED.

Bah...but YOUR gas stations make me walk alllllllll the way across the lot into the store to pay cash, making me temporarily lose line-of-sight with my car. It's like there's some anti-Credit Card At The Pump conspiracy down there. Of course, I have no problem with $1 beers either, so...guess I'll call it even.

Aside from $1 beers they carry a huge variety of craft beer

This. Just drove across the country in my BRZ and was weirded out by Oregon's (and parts of Canada's) full services. The people were always nice and careful, but still, I'd rather have the liability be on ME if something goes awry involving my car.

Also, 40 degrees in the rain? Shoooooot! How about 40 BELOW in the snow, son?!! It takes less than 4 minutes, you should be dressed for the weather regardless, and you shouldn't be smelling like gasoline...

OK Daddy. Lots of "shoulds" and "shouldn'ts" there! I'll gladly leave the task to my careful gas jockeys while relaxing in climate controlled comfort, my cold weather survival gear (girlfriend) within reach.

And yes, I've spent considerable time in AK during all seasons including the middle of winter cold testing vehicles. You can keep your ice fog and block heaters.
