DI Popping noise, just installed new updated tune file.

I just got the updated tune file from @FA20Club.com (great company and products btw) over the weekend that includes Toyota's fix for the DI seals. I finally had the chance to flash the update.

I have had the "popping" noise 4 times in the past 2 months.I am driving 10 hours up to VA to see the girlfriend this weekend so this gives me a great opportunity to see if the updated tune fixes the issue.

I will report back over this weekend with my findings. Keep in mind that if the injector seals are already damaged then this update will not fix the issue, I am still curious if this will make a difference though.

Has anyone flashed the new update? What have you noticed since the update?

Yes, I doubt it will fix anything since the popping indicates the DI is already burning itself up. But, anything I can contribute to the community regarding this issue may help for something.

at first glance, i read it like you had or still had the popping noise after applying the updated tune. maybe something like "Testing updated tune to counteract DI popping/seals melting". not a huge deal, but you made my heart sink a little before i read your actual post.

i haven't had any symptoms, but i'm anxiously waiting for my updated tune. i hope its a true fix for all of us

Could you please clarify this? So there is an official Toyota fix (ECU reflash) for the DI seals?

From what I've read Toyota came up with a fix through the ECU. I'm not sure, that's just what I've read.

No popping whatsoever so far. But these have only been short trips. I have been bogging the car on purpose and short shifting to try to induce the popping (heavy load, low RPM) and still nothing. I still don't have hopes as this as a fix for me since popping does mean there is already damage. But, so far so good. I'm heading on the 10hr trip tomorrow afternoon so look for updates over the weekend. Keep in mind I will be with the girlfriend and 24 LeMans is this weekend so I may not have time to update promptly but I will do my best.

Have a good weekend everyone

I doubt your ears are the best measurement device. If I were you having heard the pop once I would probably pull the injectors. I know going to the dealer is a hassle but if people don't force the issue it won't really ever get fixed. If the dealer won't do it, it would be in your best interest to find someone else if you plan on keeping past warranty.

The tough thing is many of the reports are that the problem doesn't get bad till after 25k. At that rate, dealers could just replace o-rings and never fix the root cause. This is sort of a slow death. It reminds me of when the EJ25 first came out and Subaru had the dealers add stop leak which kept the head gaskets from completely blowing till after the warranty expired. They waited over 10 years before they upgraded the gaskets to MLS and changed the head design to really fix the issue. I hope we don't have a repeat of history here. Surely Subaru learned that reliability past warranty is important for brand loyalty and trust.

Absolutely! I will definitely take it to the dealer when work slows down and I have the time. This weekend I completed the trip and have had NO popping or any other issues. We've been taken local trips around town (food, movies etc) and still no popping. Still going to the dealer though

I received the files as well, but have a few questions. Maybe some of you may know...

1) The files that were sent, were stock/base files. Will we be getting a more "custom" tune with these new changes? Will we need to do the typical 3rd gear WOT logging, or can he transfer over all the settings from the previous files?

2) He sent us two stock files. One was for an automatic, one was for a manual. However, they weren't labeled...so I'm not sure which is which. Can anyone confirm which file is for a manual? I'm guessing it's the ZA1JA01C file, since my previous stock file was ZA1JA00C. Is this correct?

Please keep us posted on how the car runs. I'm still running the older tune, because the new tune isn't setup for my mods.

Thanks

Maybe @FA20Club.com can answer these? I don't really want to flash my ECU with a stock file, if a tune with my settings is coming.

The update I received is a custom tune. I received the updated stock files afterwards in a separate email.
