Popping sound

Bone stock FR-S, 2.6k miles in, just went for a long drive (600 miles back and forth). Haven't hit a pothole or anything, just your regular freeway roughness.

I hear a pop sound from the front-passenger side whenever accelerating or stopping quickly, sometimes also when changing lanes. It happens once, then it won't repeat until the next event above, so I don't think it's the tires. My guess is something rubbery from the suspension. Anyone else having the same issue?

Sounds like the infamous leaky injector.

My guess would be suspension of some sort.

What freeway were you driving on? 101, 110, 10 or 5? 10, 5, and 101 have really horrible road conditions from what i remember. I wouldn't rule out struts crapping out on you. How long have you had the car for?

I'd also double check the lugs or the cvboot (not sure if this car has issues with them) -- try turning the steering wheel and see if that pops anything out for you. *shrugs* just guessing based on what you said.

Had it for about 2 months now. Driving on I-5 (LA to SF to LA). How could this be the injector?

Popping sound is from detonation that was causes by the improper ignition timing. Hopefully i am wrong otherwise your car will be out of commision for a while.

I meant it can be reproduced when braking hard suddenly, even without revving the engine and letting the car slide downhill.

Can you reproduce the popping noise by free revving the engine at idle? I had a missing injector seal and heard misfiring right away. You can search for my youtube video on here or of course youtube.

It doesn't sound like the popping sound of the injector issue, and it doesn't seem to happen at idle (although I will have to double check this tomorrow).

Another issue that could be related (if this is about the injectors) is this: On 1st gear, with clutch pushed in and the car fully stopped, the revs seem to play up and down from 600 to 1,500 RPM. Is this normal?

But fuel is not injected when the car is above a certain rpm and the throttle is not touched (e.g. downhill engine braking).
In order to make a popping sound with a combustion process you need a spark, air (oxygen) AND fuel.

I was thinking all the way it had nothing to do with the DI leak, but the bolded part sold me. That is one of the symptoms.

A leaky fuel injector would still leak fuel, as it would be damaged right? Thus the poping we hear when they're damage. I don't know if this applies to the OP here though.
