16x7 rims with supercharger?
Hello all. I'm going to be purchasing the JRSC kit. That being said, I've fallen in love with the SBC RPF1's. RPF1's in SBC only come in 16x7, 17x9, and 18x9.5 in the 5x100 bolt pattern.
I've asked the JR owners on the forum what tire size they run, and have got answers anywhere from 225 to 255. I have also read on the forums however, that 245+ on 9 inch wheels can "numb" the steering feel. I want to avoid that. So I was thinking maybe a 225 wide tire would be best. Do you think 16x7 RPF1s with a 225 tire = good enough for 99% street use on a JRSC car? Other advice is appreciated. Thank you! |

225 tires usually have 7" as minimum recommended rim width, at least in 17" diameters. Check recommendations by tire manufacturer for specific tire model you are looking for. If you're not looking to get BBK, I believe that 16" fits stock calipers. 225 width is probably most optimal for street, also with JRSC unless you drive in Mexico
I don't believe that 17x9 with 245/40-17 would numb the steering that much, it's only 20mm wider. Haven't tried this yet but recently bought 17x9 RPF1s and planning to put 200 UTQG tires in 245/40-17 for summer street/ax/wet track. Have dedicated RPF1 in 17x8 with 235/40-17 100 UTQG tires for track. 225/45-17 fits great on 17x8 but it seems that you don't have that option with SBC. Note that less common rims may be harder to find if you bend one and need to replace.

It depends on how much power you are going to make. The more power you make the wider of a tire you are going to need. I can't imagine 225 being able to grip when you for it on a 300 whp car.

I wouldn't use 16s on a brz/frs unless it for winter duty, especially with some boost. Too much sidewall needed to get the proper height in the tires.
Why not get 17x9? They fit just fine. |

thanks for your input / advice dp1. jdmblood -- im on 93 octane and have full exhaust, so im guessing in the 270-280whp area.
ka-t_240, well, part of the reason is that right now i have stock suspension. ive heard that 245s (with 45 offset wheel) basically rub the stock suspension. thats not a problem with aftermarket coilovers of course, but if i drop money on good coilovers then ill have to push my purchase of the SC back :P. i hate the "poke" look. i want my tires flush or inside the fenders. 16x7 was my solution of not having to upgrade coilovers for a while. maybe i should say "screw it" and drop 9.7k worth of upgrades on the car at the same time lmao |

There wouldn't be any poke. Run a 235 tire on the 17x9 +45 and you will be fine. I ran a 255/40/17 on a set of 17x9+35s with camber bolts on stock suspension with no rubbing.

That, you can run 235 or 245 (slightly better fit but both are fine) on 17x9. There are more tire choices in 245.

Sticky 225/50 tyres will give you more grip than cheap, wider 17" tyres.

I'd reckon that a quality performance tire in 225/50 on a light 16x7 would be perfectly fine for a supercharged setup, especially since you've already specified that the car is 99% street driven. It's still going to be a big step up from the OEM setup.

That will be a first with 16" and FI on this platform? Rim size isn't magic, just be sure you find a suitable tyre for your needs which can be a bit harder in 16" depending on what you want to achieve. 225 section should be fine, again choice of tyre is more important. Keeping in mind that 16" will be lighter and tires usually are cheaper, there is a good chance you'll be able to keep better tires for the same budget.
Also, for daily driving and less then perfect roads, some more sidewall can actually help you find some more grip from tire suspension even if peak grip on perfect roads will be a tad lower. |
