I had a 1970 BRG MGB-GT. Yep, a fine machine ...... iffen you could get past wondering how the 2 side draft carbs could get out of synch sitting in the garage overnight ... ?? Oh yes, the electrical fires. I only had one ..... big one. Back in CT, I was driving in my rural neighborhood when smoke came rolling out from under the hood. I popped the hood to let out the Lucas smoke, then it really flamed up. A neighbor was trying to put out the fire, while I was ripping out the back jump seat and unscrewing the covers to the batteries to disconnect them. He yelled ....... it's gonna blow ....... but I kept on at disconnecting the batteries. It didn't blow .... it just had a meltdown. Yep, pushed that machine home, replaced a bunch of wiring ..... never did figure out why it caught fire ....... ![]() Got to go ...... finish my oatmeal ..... ![]() humfrz |

@humfrz
From your post I'm assuming then that your 1970 MGB had 2-6V batteries behind the front seat like my 1964 did. My MGB had a positive ground system. I replaced the batteries and hooked them up to negative ground, fried a bunch of wires. Just Googled it. From 1968 on they switched to negative ground. http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?1,1608742 Last edited by RickyBobby; 03-10-2016 at 05:53 PM. |

Seems like the MGs were the late 1960's to mid 1970's version of the FR-S. Then there were the Triumphs, presumably not quite as good from what I gather.
Incidentally, my dad turned 88 today. Isn't really any more senile than he was in his 40's. Gonna go take some Metamucil now...LOL

I thought I would be in the old crowd at 45 but I'm surprised how many older Gents there are here. I'm also surprised how many of you owned old British sports cars, especially seeing as how I'm a Brit and have never owned a single one (seemed like way too much work). Apparently, I only drive cars from the Axis countries anyway as I've owned 3 Evos, VW Golf GTI, Porsche 911 and a couple of Audis, looking at maybe an Alfa Romeo or Nissan for my next car. Who won the bloody war anyway?

Then there is always this toy. Briefly considered using it rather than a spare tire for the FRS. Older than most of the young whippersnapper kid's dads on this site! Wonder how many can even figure out what it is without Googling?
Built it up from an oil-spot I found on the driveway, I did. I wonder if anyone will ever restore an FRS?

![]() It really isn't surprising that so many older guys had British sports cars since they were really the only affordable ones brought over for a long time. Then the Japanese invaded and that was the end of them.
