I've got snows on mine here in NY. I can drive fine in 4 inches, but from a complete stop on an incline? No, the car is too light for that, gotta find an alternate route. Can I drive it with the confidence of summer tires in July? No, it's very easy to gas the tail out on snow.

This is on Blizzak LM60's with a Vortech SC.

The WS Blizzak would perform better I'm sure, but I didn't want to give up too much dry performance.

Matter of fact, if there is 4 inches of snow on the road and I have all the traction control stuff on, the car refuses to go. I have to turn all the traction stuff off to get moving by having the tires just spin and spin to push me along.

For those with winter tires, do you have this issue?? I really hate my BRZ in the snow!
I've got Xi3's on and have no issues in the snow. The TCS and VSC scare the shit out of me in the snow so I turn them off immediately.

Summer tires are why I drove several hundred miles further in the MR2 when I picked it up in Portland. There was no way in hell I was taking the car onto snow covered roads with summer tires.

Even if it's dry outside, the stock tires aren't meant to be driven in temps below 45F. The tire compound isn't designed for those temperatures. In freezing temps, the Primacys (or any summer tire) become rock hard and provide very little grip. Sure, most of us can get the car moving, but the whole point of having good tires is to have good grip in emergency situations - when you need to brake all of a sudden, or swerve to avoid that deer/car/person in the road. If you drive on the Primacys or any summer tire in below freezing temperatures, you're putting yourself and everyone else around you at risk. In some European countries, insurance will not cover you if you crash in the winter and are found to have summer tires on the car, even if the accident is not your fault.

Ya , I agree. Never sure in the snow what they are doing other than seeming to bog the car down.

On reason I did not get snow tires is that most of the time our roads are dry with no snow in the winter. Not sure how the car would handle with snow tires and dry snowless roads.

Winter tires have more grip on dry pavement than summer tires when the temperature drops below 40 degrees. Then definitely give sloppy handling, but you will stop shorter. The rubber compound used on summer tires simply gets too hard in cold winter weather to offer much grip. Winter tires are super soft, so you get squishy handling but it also means the rubber is still soft at low temperatures, and is therefore able to grip the road.

This. Unless the tires have studs (illegal in many places due to road damage), you're not buying snow tires. You're buying winter tires.

Winter tires do help in snow, but it's not enough to let you gas it or even safely drive at posted speeds if there's any good amount of snow on the ground. Their real benefit is when it's dry. It was 8°F and dry tonight as I drove home from work and my winter tires have more grip than the stock Primacy HPs do in the summer.

They (Xi3) have similar grip in the dry <40F to the stocks in optimal conditions with less noise and a better ride.

I have snow tires and concur you need them. However, a friend of mine at work who was looking out for me one snowy day, sent me this link that I thoughtt was pretty cool:

We don't usually get much snow here in North Carolina, but we did this week. I kept the BRZ in the garage, and drove the mini-van to work. I'm happy to have that option. Don't like either the snow or the salt for the BRZ.

This, also put something heavy in your trunk. With the stability control that is standard on this car, you shouldn't have any more issues.
