It's a non-issue, and will not harm your car.

Off Topic: Fenrir, I, for one, would appreciate your thoughts on the wisdom and viability of the DI + PI head design of this car. Now that we have had a chance to live with the car for a little while, do you think that this was a good idea? Or is this turning out to be a foray into "over tech" when a simpler design would have been a better choice? Perhaps a separate thread could be started.

Toyota has been known to go to great lengths to build and retain a reputation of a reliable hassle free automobile manufacturer. If a serious issue were to arise that is widespread, evidence leads me to believe that they will do everything in their power to offer a reasonable solution.

If the pumps die after 300,000 miles they'll probably shrug and say "well that's the design life, here's the cost of a replacement pump", if they're setting vehicles on fire to blowing up engines due to malfunction at 150,000 miles they'll probably issue a recall and a new part will be implemented.

Lancia was forced to buy back rusting Beta's, Ford recalled hundreds of thousands of vehicles for the cruise control catching on fire, Toyota issued a recall on their vehicles when the "sudden acceleration" debacle arose not to mention many other issues that got fixed by manufacturers (and a few that didn't). At this point I trust Toyota/Subaru, they're smart, they know that if there's any danger that it's in their best interest to fix it immediately. Not to mention the hundreds of engineers tasked with designing, testing, and manufacturing the pump.

@Strat: I'll believe it if you believe it. However, there is also evidence that Toyota is no different than any other mfr. "Going the extra mile" or "protecting the brand" makes for nice taking points, but it is not part of the model any longer. Suppressing costs in the short term (which often means denying warranty clams) is the widespread practice. If Toyota thought that this car, or any of their cars, was special to the brand, they would have done more in the design and mfr. and less in the p.r. As things are, we have a $25k car that is worth every penny of $23.5.

Note: I am only holding the Japanese car industry to the very high standards that they themselves set in prior decades. There was a time, not so very long ago, when you bought a Japanese car because you knew that, more or less, all you would ever have to do is put oil and gas in it.

The chirping had been getting worse and worse over the 8 months. But after 8 months, I noticed it started to go away. I had this car for 9 1/2 months now, and the chirp magically is gone now. Did this happen to anyone? Like last night, I drove it for about an hour. I revved it close to the red line a several times trying to get it to chirp, but it wouldn't chirp. But instead, now I get the noise discussed in this thread. It was hardly noticeable before, but it's now pretty loud after the chirping is gone. My video below caught the sound better than the one in that thread. I don't mind this noise at all since it's not annoying like the chirping.

@sigh: Is the chirping sensitive to ambient temperature changes? Is your absence of chirp due to a change in your local weather?

I don't think it's the temperature. The temperature hardly changes through out the year here. High is 80 and low is 70 now, and it's only 5 to 10 higher during the summer. Some colder days in summer are colder than some warmer days in winter.

When you look at your dash and and see 30mpg, that's the result. This topic has also been discussed at length in other threads. I don't have any handy, but I've read them on this forum.

It's likely a change in fuel mixture. We've already pretty much cemented the fact it's ethanol content in fuel, which varies drastically between brands and batches. My car has chirped since day 1, off and on. It's currently not, but I filled up at a gas station with ethanol-free fuel last fill up.

PI + DI just to achieve 30 mpg? If that's the only benefit, then it comes at too high a price.

Sports cars are the wrong place to look for mpg anyway. But I know that many here care about it as much as performance. They're also buying diet ice cream and discount orthodonture.

CAFE requirements don't have exemptions for sports cars.

Besides there are more benefits than just fuel economy. 100 hp/liter is nothing to scoff at. Especially in a car as cheap as this one.

So I have had two pumps replaced, my chirps are still there. I've decided to get used to it. I just helped my friend drop a LS1 in his FD Mazda and the electric fuel pumps we installed are ten times louder. SOA never called me back after the second pump was installed so I've gotten used to the lousy service. When I consider it I am fortunate, I know how to work on the car and driving it washes away a majority of it's short comings. 1st year car blues go away enventually.

I am beginning to think that you are 100% correct. Honestly, the chirp never really bugged me, but I listen to mu music loudly. I only hear it when I'm pulling my trash in and out on trash day and the car is sitting at idle. Yesterday, the chirp was no where to be heard. I'm just a touch under 1800 miles and I have literally had it since day one as well.

Mine seems to be fading especially as the miles click on and the ambient temperature goes up. All my fuel has had ethanol and I don't prefer a brand, mostly Arco or 76 (whatever is convenient and cheap) and seeing as it's California all 91 octane.

My parents work for SET (Southeast toyota) and they are friends with some higher ups in the company. Just wanted to relay some information about the fuel pump fix. I had my parents speak to them about the issue and to see what they've heard about a possible fix and supposedly they will have a replacement fuel pump; different than the current one out for the TSB, that should fix the issue. However it won't be available till mid-late April. Ill keep this thread updated with anything else I hear.
