Yeah. It's so weird. I'm thinking it's kinda like Bose wave design. Using itty bitty speakers that travel through twists and turns before it gets to you.

I've built multiple home theater setups using 3" full ranges in a TQWT (tapered quarter wave tube), high-order ported, and tapped horn enclosures. There's not enough space to really get solid extension from a 3" woofer (80-100 Hz, which is still not sub bass).
If anything this is a tricked up double-reflex setup like this one, which uses a 4" driver and has an internal volume of about 1 cubic foot. If you sacrifice the behavior of the upper frequency band, maybe you could shave some space from one chamber or the other. ![]() ![]() The joy of cabin gain (amplification of low frequencies due to a confined vehicle volume) ... Edit: It does appear that 3" subwoofer technology has improved. A precise installation of this: LINK to Tang Band W3 Subwoofer might actually play down to 50 Hz, and the cabin gain would boost the bottom octave enough to sound decent. This is actually rather inspiring, if someone wants to DIY.

Thanks, though that was more of a rhetorical question. I mean srsly, what is that? a kind of split catback? Extra muffler?
I'd do anything to get rid of the catback and get myself an Y design, STi brings a kind of dual catback?! This is just so wrong |

whatever, always nice to have an actual soundfile to go with it. Doesn't even sound half bad - for a catback, that is.

Did some more digging on the 3" subwoofer.
![]() It appears to use a tiny driver on the back of chamber with a passive radiator. If you look at the specs, it's 5x the moving mass of a traditional 3". BL is not bad (5 Tm). Suspension is almost twice as stiff as a traditional 3". Voice coil is the same size, but given the x-max... it's safe to assume that the gap is pretty empty and non-linear. This seems like a wacky cone/suspension design that manages to transform their usual woofer into a subwoofer. It looks like a number of designs would work with this driver, including a standard ported. If the Subaru design is a standard ported (which the shape implies), the port is probably 3/4 to 1" port tuned at 45-50 Hz.

I admit my utter confusion. This picture made no sense to me, and the description did not help.
![]() Thinking that they were trying to squish a 3" subwoofer into the 86 initially seemed like a terrible idea (and it still probably is)... but it got me thinking. If we were trying to stay in the factory locations, what's the best low frequency extension we can manage?? In my confusion of thinking ^^^ was a subwoofer, I found that they do exist and that it might actually be a decent idea for a product if the box specs make it feasible. The floodgate of bad ideas opened up, such as this: 6" ![]() 3" ![]() 2" ![]() I've done alot of car audio competition in the past, and I'd prefer not to destroy the fun & utility of this car with a trunk full of subs. I shall stew on the options... and we'll see where it goes.

Judging by the size of the crossover components, it's just a replacement midrange with it's own enclosure (instead of being open to the dash). A surface-mount tweeter (presumably will have a swivel). There may be a subwoofer involved, but it is not pictured.
Does Beyer or anybody else actually understand what will be released?
