Today I went to start the car after more than 24h. It was 15*F outside.
I got like five or so good (loud) knocks in the first few seconds.

I was expecting this so I set up two cams for recording. The bulit-in mics blow but maybe I'll be able to salvage something.

Not happy..

I wonder if the anti-drainback valve in the oil filter isn't functioning properly and the oil is draining out of the filter.

I've noticed a "knock" a few times while warming the engine up. It sounds more like something is loose and slightly rattling.

Btw weather is 40-60F

I think this happened to me today. Went to start my car in the morning, first try it would not start, second try it started after about 5 or more seconds with the same kind of knocking you guys are describing. It went away after about a minute and the drive to work seemed normal, although i kept the revs as low as possible. The temp was zero celcius. Ive never had this issue before today, even when it was minus 20 C.

Kinda concerned, really thinking of going to the dealership about this.

I've run into this issue in the past few weeks. I went to start my car after work and it started but then sounded like it was going to stall and then was ok. This past weekend I started the car and it hesitated like it wasn't fully on.

Dropped my car off at the dealer and got a rental. I recorded the knocking and gave them a video. Interested in what they find.

I'm interested to hear what they have to say. Seems a number of people are running into this to some degree or another.

I'm curious, how much fuel did you guys have left in your tanks when you encountered this?

After asking around a bit, people have told me this can happen in cold temps with low fuel levels due to condensation. My Dad said it happens occasionally in low temps with his BMW M coupe when it is low on fuel.

When it happened to me, I had a quarter tank of fuel at 0 Celcius.

I wouldn't call it a knock, but my dad said it's got a miss on start up. Not sure if it's only the cold starts though since I've only had it since it's been cold. It misses for the first few minutes of idle. Not sure if this similar.

Yeah that sounds EXACTLY like what mine does. But if I just start driving it's fine. Even if I only drive for 30 seconds or so and come to a stop again it's gone.

Happens at every fuel level for me. And it seemed a little bit worse on Shell 91 than it did with Ultra 94, but that could be me.

I get one bad hiccup on start up and that's pretty much it. Not completely positive if it's knock but I can't suggest anything else it could be.

I was so sure it was due to my tune until I flashed to stock and still had the same issue. I'll try to take a video and see if other people can agree they have a similar issue.

Mine has been doing this all winter when its below maybe 10 degrees. Mostly sounds like its oil starved (valve tick, piston slap, ect)
