Not sure what you had for comparison unless you watched a pile of leave it to beaver since it just was an extension of the sixties for much of the decade. It just was what it was.
And Austin Powers was distinctly all 60s.

I guess the places I went out weren't really suitable for platform soles. I hated disco. Plus, at 6'6" I felt pretty conspicuous already. No need to add more to freakish tallness. And, no offense intended, I thought them pretty silly looking. But, like you said, I was the big nerdy guy who thought all the cool folks were strange. Vietnam was a sword of Damocles until '75 so I avoided the Army. I imagine that style of dress would have been a little out of place on the firing range or obstacle course.

I won't argue 60s or 70s. You're probably right. I was in highschool from 69-72. From that perspective I saw the 70s as a superficial reflection of the 60s - glitz and disco. Never was able to sit all the way through Saturday Night Fever.

I remember Howard Hesseman's Dr. Johnny Fever (WKRP) threatening to throw himself under the wheels of Donna Summer's tour bus if he was forced to play disco. I empathized with how the character felt.

Say what you want about the Bee Gees but they were true musicians/performers, not to mention all the production work they did for others.

Disco was only a small portion of their portfolio as well. It is where they made most their money, but they existed long before and after Disco.

Like many performers of that generation, they were capable of reproducing their sound over and over again on stage without electronic manipulation. Too bad more of the current artists can't do that.

This discussion has been really helpful. The 70s themselves weren’t really bad. I fell in love for the first time. Then, I fell love for the second time. I married the second girl. 45 years later still working on it. I think we’re getting better. Started road racing motorcycles. Had a ball for a long time. So it wasn’t Vicki L that the picture represented. It was DISCO that had ruined my 70s vibe. I Hate Disco. Not the 70s. Not even Gibblets. It was that godawful noise. I feel SO liberated. Here I’ve been, stewing in cognitive dissonance all these decades and now I know what has been bothering me.

The "The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" documentary on HBO is supposed to be good. I think it came out last year, but I just learned about it earlier this week. I'm hoping to find time to watch it this weekend.

As to their talent and sound skills (etc.), in the documentary, it is my understanding, there is a discussion and possibly archival footage of them looping a reel-to-reel tape around a studio on make shift stands in order to continuously sample a drum track without introducing gaps because the drummer was sick and they needed to finish a production. Just crazy levels of skill that is casually dismissed because all most people remember is their few disco albums.

Actually, Hunter Thompson. Like Oscar Wilde, I don't always share his (their) opinions (although in that quote he captures an attitude that is sadly lacking and that I admire), but I do appreciate his wit, wryness, and turn of phrase.
