I am very curious about this comparison. I will probably still get the fr-s. But, I was starting to look elsewhere only because of some of the engine issues discussed in this forum (idle and chirping). I happen to like the veloster's look. I also like some of the extra "bells and whistles" the veloster offers. And the turbo is what really makes the veloster a reasonable contender. However, the fr-s is going to be the more fun car to drive as it's a real sports car. I am just nervous about some of the engine issues. I hope Toyota takes proper care of these issues. I pretty much have decided to take a chance and follow through purchasing the fr-s. The FR-S is what gets my heart going!
To the "kid" who started this thread: go with your heart! What car gives you that extra little spark? Go with that one. And don't mind these guys on here giving you "live choices" advice. That's for your dad to do! Since, he's offering you the chance to get either of these cars --- get the one that grabs your heart! Just for the record: I got my first car at 16 (that was the legal age back then, 26 years ago). Thar car was my grandpa's 1974 Mazda rx4. It only had 22k miles on it. And was in perfect condition. I totaled it 3 months later. I was SOOO bummed. But, I lived through it and grew from it. I drove a used honda civic for a year or so. And then my grandma bought me a brand new Acura Integra. I loved that car and treated it well! Congrats on whatever car you get. Be good to it AND enjoy it ---- life is too short! |

The chirp and idle stuff is just first year teething problems...the Veloster turbo will have them too...ALL cars experience these first year issues (unless perhaps its just a mild evolution with a carryover engine and transmission).

Like some others said, since it's a gift from your father, get the FRS and many racing lessons with qualified trainers, you will grow from it, have tons of fun and adrenaline rush and you will master the car more than most 25-40 yo guys that replied with their advice, plus you will learn you can't get any better driving feel than on a race track.

Is this really a serious question?
Veloster Turbo is a downgraded hot hatch lookalike with a garbage suspension, poor steering feedback and ugly looks. FR-S / BRZ is a pure RWD sports car. Might as well have asked about whether to buy an Etch-A-Sketch or a gaming laptop. |

I'm 17 years old and my first car was my FR-S. I pretty much learned to drive a stick in my FR-S (the drive home was interesting). I pay $473 a month plus gas. Age doesn't matter. Its the level of maturity..

The FR-S/BRZ don't really compete with the Veloster Turbo.
Here's MotorTrend's video review of it. Two things that stuck out in this review as red flags where the open front diff, and lack of steering feel. |

FR-S over Veloster any day...I seriously considered getting the Veloster but I definitely prefer the FR-S (test drove the Veloster as well; I'll be honest, I don't love Hyundai just because it's Hyundai...that wasn't really a factor in my decision though). Actually, when I was still looking for my car, I visited a Toyota dealership and saw a Veloster in the parking lot next to the Scions and pointed it out..the salesman said it was one of his colleague's cars and that he now regrets not having waited for the FR-S.

I know some people like the styling, but IMHO the Veloster is challenging the Aztek for ugliest car.

Just picked up my V-Turbo. It's a fun car but no BRZ. It *may* pull a little harder in a straight line, the interior is cooler looking, but lesser quality especially the seats. It turns good but not nearly as sharp as the BRZ. It's my wife's car btw.
Here's some size comparison shots. I guess it weighs about 100-200 pounds more then the BRZ. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Still, hey hope you and yours enjoy it! I wouldn't toss it out if someone gave it to me (and there are some cars I wouldn't take for free, well maybe I would and flip them for something else) |

I was very interested in one until I learned they were not going to do something with the rear suspension. It will still be a great little car to rip around town in though.
