Well if I were you I would slap on an inexpensive used exhaust, that way you will hear exhaust tone instead of engine

It really could be the solution to part of your problem. Keep in mind though that even with an exhaust it still will sound like a boxer engine with an exhaust note to match. It can take some getting used to as well if you are used to inline and V block tones.
