Yep, those were different times for sure. No helmets, no seat belts, no knee or arm pads ...... what a great way to learn how to drive.

Of course, out on your 20 acres, you had safety features:

* emergency braking - grandpa's big foot ready to reach over to hit the brake

* emergency stability control - grandpa's big arm ready to grab the wheel

Many kids these days, jump off their skate boards, slide behind the wheel of their mother's camry, take the drivers test and are ........ready to drift .....

Am I other only person that has actually read and understood what Paul is saying? He has never once said anything about laws (unless you mean where he said you attract the cops attention which you do. Of course then when most here get a ticket they whine about how the police are unfair and only looking for money. He was very clear that what he was speaking to are the guys that claim "YA bro I drive at red line all the time, heel and toe for every turn and power slide into my parking spot in the morning". This is what he was saying isn't real and he is right. Anybody that claims they drive like that ALL THE TIME is full of shit. He never said not to have fun he said do it in the right place at the right time which again is something many here can seem to understand when and where that is. As far as the MT thing goes he is again correct but he just didn't narrow it down to the right group. Anybody about 40 or under in North America that drives an MT and are part of the 4% club probably had not proper instruction beyond the internet. Much of what the internet teaches is crap and just keep building worse and worse MT drivers as they pass it on as "the best way".
LOL, a good rant wasted. I'm trying to figure out how you got that out of anything I said, or anyone else for that matter.

I'm not the one who's butthurt. You and Paul should go rub some lotion on each others ass.

Added For TCoat, a summary of my posts: It must suck to live in a nation where 4K on the tach is pushing your luck with the law, and causes people who may hear it to be in fear of their lives.

Well, my older cousins from West Virginia were rumored to have delivered some moonshine ......

The closest I ever came to running shine was getting busted for bringing a Ford Gran Torino trunk full of booze from Nevada into California. .......

(that's another story)

Harsher punishment for that than murder.

As to the original point of the thread. I'm not that fussed with the torque dip. I mean I not really, normally a positive optimistic person but for some reason I don't feel the torque 'dip' I feel do however feel the torque kick at 4.5k.

I love how the car behaves more or less like any other 2 litre saloon until it hits the point that most 2 litre saloons would be nearing the red line, looking to shift when the GT86 kicks into boisterous teenager mode for another 3k rpm.

It's like it has two modes.

Normal and WOOOHOOO!

The difference being over here we don't typically have police trouble just for entering "WOOOHOOO" territory or terrify others.

Why is this "Once stopped. If you will be waiting any longer than a 5 or 10 seconds, handbrake and neutral in that order" a requirement? Is it required for AT cars? Why is sitting in neutral with the handbrake on safer than being in first and able to move quickly if you need to?

It has been found that there are more situations where having the hand brake on will be safer than there are situations requiring you to move away quickly.

The term is "secure the car". Handbrake and neutral means that no matter what happens to you the car is going nowhere. Also if you get rear ended, in tests it is shown you are much less likely to bolt forward into the car / pedestrian in front if you have the handbrake on versus the foot brake. (I believe there is a high probability the impact will cause you to lose contact with the brake pedal).

At night, especially in the rain it can be a bit annoying having your whole car lit up by the person in front's brake lights. They are quite bright compared to tail lights.

Autos it is even more important to put the handbrake on (or select Park) as if anything happens to you while stopped in drive such as a heart attack or you pass out or get hit by someone hard and pass out the car will simply drive off in crawl and won't stop until it hits something solid.

The reality is, that once people pass their test about 70% of people will sit on the brake at junctions. They will do the pedal shuffle hill start and roll back a few inches etc.

Personally I usually use the handbrake/neutral for waiting and for hill starts as I just find it more relaxing to not have to worry about clutch/brake etc. I usually keep my hand on the gear stick and have it in 1st and hand on the handbrake during the amber light ready to go on the green. Makes hill starts much easier too.

Do they require motorcyclists to do this as well?

LOL. Bike is worse! The Hendon Shuffle it's called.

Stop the bike with you right foot on the brake, so you can use both brakes safely.
Left foot thus goes down as you stop.
If it's a wait, left foot up, right foot down, secure bike with front brake.
Shift into neutral with you left foot.
Put your left leg back down and put your right leg back up.
Reapply the rear brake and release the front.
Bike secure.
When the lights begin to change, reverse the process.
Left foot up, right foot down, 1st.
Right foot up, left foot down, rear brake on.
Bite clutch and full away releasing the rear brake.
Both feet up.

You'll laugh and think it looks ridiculous but a lot of people still ride this way as it's how they were taught. Personally I only do it if I know it will be a long stop and holding the clutch can get annoying. I've become so used to stopping with my left foot down I end up having to do the "Hendon shuffle" anyway to get neutral.
