Well, you didn't ask me to come down to Arkansas ...... but if you did, I'd have to decline ....... cause I'd be afraid we would be late to Bubba's BBQ and there wouldn't be nutten left......

You know where Redfield, Arkansas is .. ??

Would you like for me to tell you a story about where the best BBQ in Arkansas was back in the 70's .......??

Or are you still pissed about losing the tractor pull ..... ??

I'm sitting down the road from Redfield AS WE SPEAK!

But after spending some time in Texas, I'm no longer convinced there IS any kick-ass BBQ in Arkansas. Whole Hog is pretty darn good though.

If you guys have ever driven one with an AT you'd see that unless you put your foot in it, it upshifts pretty much like the econo-indicator wants the MT to be driven.

The difference is in stepping on the gas. The AT will downshift way before the engine starts chugging.

As I described in my previous post, lugging is a combination of both low engine speed AND asking for a lot of torque. The econo-indicator is a nice guide as long as you remember to downshift before stepping on the gas.

I also noticed you've made posts about your car knocking when coming to a stop. Perhaps you are keeping your rpms too low. I think the lowest rpms you should cruise at safely should be about 2500 rpm. There's no reason to almost lug this engine just for muh mpg's when it runs efficiently enough when driven right.
Just found this in my manual. Thought it was interesting.

Occasional constipation is normal too. Doesn't mean we have to like it.

edit: Actually, I'm pretty sure that line in the manual is in reference to actual engine knock. Since the stock ROM is optimized for 93-94 octane, it's always pulling timing and dancing back and forth with the knock sensor. Sometimes the ECU gets a little sloppy.

Small world ......huh ......

OK, BBQ story time. Just on the outskirts of Redfield, at the end of Boone Street, there was a big old, almost abandoned toxicology lab. So, the company I worked for (Trans Genetic Sciences), a venture capital backed, smoke and mirrors company, bought it and sent two toxicologists and myself down to revived it.

One hot summer morning, this ol boy was setting up a BBQ on the SE corner of the lot. The lead toxicologist, who was from Louisiana, heard that he was a local that made great BBQ, so he hired him to fix the staff up with a BBQ for that evening.

I kept an eye on his operation, which consisted of several cut in half 55 gal barrels, covered with chicken wire. I wanted to make sure he wasn't getting his meat from the back of the lab, where we buried the test animals that didn't fair so well.

Come about 5:00 pm, we all gathered down at his location, drank beer, swatted mosquitoes and ate BBQ till we could hardly move. Great BBQ!

While standing still in neutral with the engine at normal idle, gradually step on the gas. Raise it to 1000 RPM and hold it. That's as much gas you should give it when you accelerate from a crawl at idle.

Now gradually go from 1000 to 2000 RPM. ...

Practice that and you'll get how to not lug the engine. If you ever make it chug below 2000 RPM, you're doing it wrong.
I tried it! Our gas pedal is very sensitive compared to other cars. But I'll continue practicing!

If you can keep it between 3000 and 7000, you'll be fine.
Lmao. No. I was coming into stop, then kinda cruised. It was just for a second when I realized it. Then I downshifted.

Definitely use first for those situations.

So I paid attention to my tach while driving home yesterday and today.

Tcoat, 3k in first is about 16mph. In a parking lot situation, that's entirely too fast. So you're either slipping the clutch like crazy or you're not practicing what you preach.

Parking lot speeds, about 5-8mph, is about 1500-1700rpms. In first. According to you that's just torturing the engine.

55mph in sixth is about 2400rpm. To get it up to 3k, I had to shift down to fifth.

Are you really gonna stand by the above statement?

You really cruise highways in fifth and claim that's helping you... somehow?
