When you press auto, you're in "full auto". If you manually adjust any of the controls that are automatically controlled, then you deactivate the automatic control of that function, and you switch from "full auto" to "auto".
For exemple, if you touch the vents position button when in "full auto", then you become "auto", and the car doesn't control the vents position anymore. If you adjust the fan speed, then it stay at that speed, and the car doesn't control it anymore. Once there is nothing for the car to control, then the "auto" dissapear. Appart from the fan speed, vent position there is also the AC and recirculation button that need to be "touched" for the air control to become full manual. |

And you are right... my purpose was to highlight the illogical, unintuitive nature of the system. ACs give me headaches so I use them minimally. I prefer the fan, and regularly adjust it or I have the whole thing switched off and use the windows. And, manually adjusting the fan control does NOT turn off Auto mode! It turns off Full Auto but not Auto. Still don't know how I have managed to do it a couple of times. Last edited by Esseff; 04-27-2017 at 10:12 PM. |

Well, after more investigation I have finally worked out how to turn off all the Auto modes... you switch the Recirculate button on then off.
Obvious... NOT!! (yes, sarcasm intended) |

The Full auto mode control 4 functions (fan speed, vents positions, recirc and AC). If you manually adjust any of those function you go to auto mode instead of full auto, and the car control the 3 remaining functions (plus the temperature). You need to manually adjust all 4 to remove completely the Auto mode. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Congratulations! Yep, back in the day ..... it was easier. If you pushed the handle under the dashboard, lots of fresh air came in ..... pull it up, fresh air stops. The heater was 3 zones ...... depending on which little door(s) you opened .... shut them all, no heat. humfrz |

When the cars are fully autonomous, you will be able to travel to your programmed destination and simultaneously watch an instructional video about operation the HVAC system.
My first ride (1951 Ford F-1 truck) had the good ol' cowl vent as depicted in humfrz's picture, as well as the radiator in the passenger footwell for heat. |

Back then, most heaters were mounted on the inside of the firewall. Within the heater unit was a small radiator like core. The air was forced, either by a fan or convection, from the top, through the core out the vents.
Further back in the day, the exhaust manifold was shrouded and the shroud directed heat off the manifold into the cabin. A dirty trick during the winter, was to lay a slice of limburger cheese on a cold manifold ....... ya get the drift ...... ![]() I gotto go ...... feed the horses some oats and hit the hay ... I remember fully manual climate controls.
Get in the car, check it on heat, turn the heat up to max, turn the fan up, EUGH! Freezing cold air... turn the fan back down. Drive for a while. Turn the fan back up, EUGH! Still freezing, turn the fan back down. Repeat at least twice until there is warm air, then turn the fan way up. 10 minutes later it's too warm so I start reducing the heat and the fan. Then it's too chilly so I readjust. Over and over. Switching from Window to Window and feet to feet as the window defogs. What I like about auto is it does all this for me.
