Facebook so gallantly reminded me of a friend's birthday today. This friend took his own life a few years back. Since the day I found out, I wondered if I could have stopped him from literally pulling the trigger.

I know that we're mostly men here, and it's important to maintain our image as burly lumberjacks to our peers. But I urge you to have an open dialogue with your friends about mental health. Let's end this shitty fucking stigma once and for all. I want each and every one of us to be able to say "I talked to a friend today, and found out he's going through a tough time. I lent him my ear." That's all it takes. That can stop one more mom and dad from burying their son, one more wife without her husband and kids without a dad.

I remember many years ago, when I was an up and coming soldier in my regiment. A sergeant pulled me aside at a mess function, looked me square in the eyes and said "Cole, you know that I've been dealing with PTSD for a while now. You know what I've been going through. I need you to lead the change within this unit to make sure that our new soldiers know that it's ok to talk about mental health." For years, I always brushed it off. But recently, I've come to realize the gravity of what he said to me.

To the sons on here, please tell your father's that you love them. And that you appreciate them teaching you how to be a man. To the fathers ( @Tcoat and @humfrz looking at you two, especially) tell your kids that you love them. Let them know how special they are to you.

I'm sorry for an overly emotional post. But I cracked a couple of beers in memory of a friend/fallen comrade. And I'm hating myself for how long it took for the importance of this to sink in.

Please, just let the people close to you know that you love them.

There's this turn exiting into a wall that's pretty butt clenching, at least the first few times I encountered it a few months back. Except that was a paced session essentially, not a free run.
