Kartboy Rattle
Hey all,
Have been searching for the fix for this for months, have tried a lot of different things, and have had ZERO luck. Occurs at ~4k rpm to redline in any gear, but it's most obvious when in 2nd + 4th. I've tried: -Adding stock washer to shift linkage (forgot during install) -Replacing stock washer in shift linkage with thicker washer to remove all remaining slack between arm and retainer clip -Pulling rubber boot over reverse lockout -Holding reverse lockout, but no change in noise -Driving the car with everything except shifter removed from car (center console, shift knob, both boots, etc) and touching everything I can to try to reduce noise None of these have made ANY difference. Based on comments from other users, it sounds like this is still a problem for many of us who have just been dealing with it. Still need to try: -Regreasing all bushings + ball joint -Grease washer + retaining clip in shift linkage Any other ideas? Anyone else with this issue? Will update thread with the fix once found. SOLVED: Found the 2 O-rings included with the shifter still in the plastic bag. Jacked the car up, pulled the rubber boot back, took the retaining clip out, removed the washer, installed the 2 O-rings, reinstalled washer, reinstalled retaining clip. Went for a test drive and no more rattles! Shifter feels like it has slightly more horizontal play while in gear, but happy to make that trade off for no more rattle. I double checked, but this is NOT something Kartboy includes in their DIY instructions, so I was unclear as to if I should be putting a single o-ring between the washer and arm, then the second o-ring between the clip and the washer or just double up on them between the washer and arm?

Did you use 1 or 2 rubber o-rings? Stock shifter has 1 I think but if you can fit 2 the rattle quiets down. If you have a trans bushing or positive shift bushing + the shifter it makes it worse so try removing it if so. Mine was fixed by just using 2 o-rings though.

for mine, the rattle is from the reverse lockout, NOT the linkage.
Haven't tried many fixes for mine, it seems worse when its hot out(75-80F or more). It'll start getting worse for me now that summer is around the corner, so I'll be working on a fix too. Hopefully we can figure out a fix for it, it certainly is a common issue. |

mine rattles too in the higher RPM, but isn't really that noticeable to me since the sounds of the car masks it to an extent. definitely sounds like the plastic reverse lockout rattling though.

There should have been at least one tiny rubber o ring on the pivot shaft when you removed your stock shifter, my kartboy kit came with 2 extra ones so I just replaced the one stock one and used another from the kit on the opposite end to fill in any extra gap on the shaft before I re installed the washer and clip. No rattles since then. Even before I never really had an issue (very feint rattle similar to stock noises) but I decided to double check and add the o ring and no noise at all since minus the standard mechanical noises.

![]() I'd take constant rattling at all rpm over the sloppy stock shifter. That being said, I think it's possible to make good thing better.

Is this o-ring on the white plastic piece holding the ball joint the o-ring you're talking about? If so, how would you fit 2 if there's only a single slot?

I second this.
2nd and 4th gear crazy rattle above 4k RPM. Drives me CRAZY! My theory is the reverse lockout... I have put O-rings on the linkage and it did nothing, but if I hold the lockout nice and tight while pulling, the sound is less noticeable... but who knows. Wish someone could fix this

Found a fix, not sure if anyone else here has tried it:
1. Unscrew shift knob 2. Inside the shift knob threads there is an Allen screw 3. Unscrew this, push the reverse lockout up, and a spring will pop out. 4. Fill the hole with lubricant, and cover the spring. 5. Replace all parts. Just did this today, the grease will leak from the lockout when using it, but it seems to have helped. If anyone wants pictures let me know.
