Funny, I used to own a stock is300 before that and never had any trouble shifting people and passing them if I wanted to with that fat pig with only 220hp. Most cars on the road are Hyundai elantras, chevy cruzes and other small shit like that or bigger luxo cars/truck/crossovers that don't speed.

I'm tired of all you guys talking about not being able to pass the cars with a 200hp twin like if all the cars on the road were nismo gtr's and gt500. most carrs are driven by people who shit their pants if they press the gas pedal more than halfways in and/or if they speed 20 over limit so stop talking as if everyone is the stig driving a McLaren

Yes there is the occasional a-hole with the high hp car that will refuse to let you pass him but guess what, who gives a shit, that's the minority so stop speaking like it's 99% of the people (I guess maybe Dubai excepted, because a lot of people there own insane cars). In theory, those people claiming the car is anemic and lacks power fail to understand most cars on the road have even less (most cars are used, a few year to a lot of years old, econo boxes with like 90-130hp. If you can't pass those than you have issues.

/end of rant
a) clearly ppl in Canada drive way slower than here and b) you're very angry about it.

And angry reply... Go...

Angry not so much, extremely annoyed yes. I get that the situations happen, just most people talk and make it seem like the only other cars on the road with them are gtr's sure there is the occasional asshat but as a majority of regular people (not car guys/gals) tend to drive econoboxes with little to no power there is no reason to exaggerate the the quickness of the car. Most cars, driver or car/driver combos on the road couldn't outrun a someone flooring a Miata. If you guys are being outrun by grand caravans and non evo lancer's than you need a driver mod more than anything else(unless you drive an auto then yeah you're a bit slow)

I love cars with massive horsepower as much as the next guy. Fap fodder. But in the real world, they're wretched excess. I think it's all a case of keeping up with the Joneses; armchair racers, d!ck measuring, ect. Things have gotten so good so fast that we've lost perspective on what enjoyment is to a degree. Too many nannies to save us from ourselves. If you have the means to enjoy 400+ hp on the track, then by all means, have at it. But for the majority of our driving, 200 is plenty. Point is, if I have one, is that if we focus on OUR enjoyment of driving, and no-one elses, then maybe a lot of this nonsense will cease. Sometimes less is more. Not saying anything new here but I think it bears repeating.

I agree with you and the article... Cars should be fun. But 200hp isn't much, and having a bit more doesn't hurt. That's all. Why else would so many ppl go for mods/FI on these cars?! For more fun :-)

This is a great article and i agree with all the points. Thought i would share for anybody who doesn't visit speedhunters.

I've been saying this for a while now, but so many people are caught up in the numbers game and it's true that most of the new cars are disconnected from the driver.
Look at the new NSX for example...it's in no way what the old NSX was about. It's just this computer programmed car that makes you feel like a pro on the track.

Anyways, most people don't even track so I don't understand this focus on track oritented cars. They just do it so people can say there car did this time on the nur.

This is exactly why i love our cars. They are so raw compared to the newer cars today which lack feel and a lot of times are over powered. Also we can enjoy our cars to the full potential.

Anyways, i love our cars and i hope these types of cars stay popular and get more popular in the future.

My last comment,
My 2002 stage 2 wrx had around 300hp and i could barely enjoy it. I could never take it to it's full potential, so i don't understand how people enjoy these 400+ luxury sedans and sports cars unless they go to the track every weekend.
But the twins are so severely underpowered that you had to go throw on a catback to fill in the torque dip! Couldn't you enjoy it with the little power it had already?

Damnit. I'm selling my FRS and ordered a custom Mustang GT. Now this article is making me want to keep the FRS to become a track car because i will never be able to realize the full potential of the Mustang but could have much more fun with the Scion .

maybe i will keep both. The article was great. No idea why i need a 435hp car but i wanted one and will be getting it soon.

Garage
My daily (06 Fusion) has been down all week thanks to a PATS system failure, so I've been driving my garage queen '87 SR-5 Corolla and my brothers '87 Supra N/A to work.

When people say the twins are slow I always laugh...hard. My SR-5 is -SLOW-; probably making 70hp after the 91k miles that have been put on it. Its got some pep down low, but get it past ~4700RPM and all its doing is sucking air and spitting fumes, with no additional fun effect.

Yet also, I feel everything that happens with the car. The steering wheel is connected to a shaft that is then connected to the steering rack; every jolt and bump is felt, and you can feel when the front is starting to let go. The clutch isn't assisted by anything other than the cylinders: its just a hydraulic clutch setup. The gas pedal is directly connected to the throttle via a cable, giving it (by my Fusions idea of 'response', lol) race car style throttle response.

What I'm getting at is simply that my SR-5 has enough horsepower to make the car go (And not much else), and not a single damned electronic gizmo to make its lap times "faster", and the car can STILL bring a damned smile to face somehow when I'm enjoying it on the back roads.

Manufacturers need to look at what Toyobaru and Mazda have done with the twins/Miata, and look hard! Stop trying to out math/POWER each other and start making cars that communicate on a down-to-earth level with its operator; while leaving the driver the only driver in the car that matters, not some programming code inside the ECU.

The list of newer cars I wouldn't trade for my AE86's would probably down right enrage some car guys. Why? "Cause they don't make 'em like they used ta."
