Do you have European law links? I wonder why that would be. That is interesting information!

To drive in Germany I know that wasn't the case.....

And back on topic.

When I teach my kids (or grandkids) how to drive MT, I eventually demonstrate shifting with NO CLUTCH.
Once they get the hang of it, I have them try it, but I emphasize that it is not to be used for "normal" driving, just learning.

If you can cleanly shift 1st thru 6th, then back to 2nd all without the clutch (and without grinding), then you have mastered that particular MT.

No I'm pretty sure science has determined the larger mass will take longer to accelerate

You have 80,000+ lbs pulling you backwards and it is harder to get moving.

But the force of gravity is the same. That 80000lbs is harder to accelerate than 2700. You have more tires for rolling resistance. Find definitive proof that a loaded truck defies my current understanding of physics and I will believe you

Same physics at play, but much more weight. Harder to start rolling, harder to come back after a simply mistake, it is a totally different scenario.

Hate to rehash the old thread about this, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using the handbrake to prevent you from going backwards on a hill. I admit that I mostly use my brake to hold me, but every once in awhile ... I'll use the handbrake.

Because ..... it's just one more option that can be used. Use it or don't use it. Has nothing to do with how good a driver you are.

The force of gravity is proportional to mass*. The acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass**. Hence, acceleration due to gravity is independent of mass. Come on guys, this is know since the times of Galileo.

* gravitational mass and **inertial mass, but according to Einstein equivalence principle these two are identical.

Back to the handbrake-on-hill

I learned to drive in Europe, and I don't remember exactly what I was taught back then. Long time ago. Of course I have no idea what is taught now.

But on my exam I stalled on a very small incline, barely larger than a speed hump. To prevent problems when starting again I intentionally allowed the car to roll back off that hump. The examiner asked me: "what would you do if it was an actual hill" and my response was "I'd use the hand brake" and he said "good", and I passed.

So I watched the video... did in no way prove that a truck will accelerate down hill faster than a car. Additionally, the guy who went first and was most successful dropped the air brake as he was "launching", so he did exactly as us handbrakers do. Thanks for finding a video that supports my way of doing things.

He had to have it off before starting. Using the airbrake was considered "cheating." They didn't show the last guy unfortunately, but he basically rocketed down the hill because he messed up a little bit.
