Advice on wheel/tyre size
I know there are umpteen guides here, but I'd just like a bit of advice based on others experience.
I have a stock 86 GT with the 16" wheels. Whilst letting the back end get a bit loose every now and then is obviously fun, I'm a bit fed up of the brake LSD flicking on when I pull out hard into traffic and even sometimes the slip indicator coming on if I change from 1st to second at 7,000+ RPM. So I was thinking of getting slightly wider wheels and maybe 17-18" as well to improve on grip. Any advice on width and/or whether stepping up the wheel size to improve performance is worthwhile? Note that I'm not after filling the wheel arch, just a bit more grip, and I don't find the ride all that hard, so don't mind loosing a bit of compliance due to lower profile tyres. Thanks. |

are you still using the stock tires? Change those first, good tires will make a massive difference.

I am in the U.S. where 17x7 are oem . I went to a 16x7 wheel. I then upgraded to max performance summer tire with a 225/50/16 continental extreme contact dw. There was a HUGE improvement over the stock 215/45/17. This was a great street tire! I more recently changed to a225/50/16 Yokohama Advan Neova ADO8R. This has better traction but the ride is noticeably stiffer. I would probably just consider to upgrade to a extreme summer tire.
