..a lot of people forget this fact (ahem like me) and mainly see the cars as numbers and decide to go back to something more practical and safer.. speaking of safe; unlike coupes people should definitely get some sort of rollover protection (roll bar and such).. Roll bar and the PPE Long tube headers were my first ever mods on my old Miata then I realized that I don't like compromise tires for track(aggressive street tires ) but instead I like separating track pads,wheels/tires (R comps) and be able to fit all the other things for track days (jacks, stands, tools, fluids,,,etc) so I either had to go with Miata +trailer + get something more practical for street or get a BRZ to fit the track tire/wheel set..larger community and aftermarket support of the FT86 platform made it only easier

roll bars are pretty bad for street cars imo. i mean, they work well in conjunction with proper safety equipment but not so much in a street car. the chances of a roll are so low while the chances of being rear ended or something is much higher and a rollbar is a liability there.

roll bar is highly advised for street use for roll over protection so it already comes with the NC miata (hoop style in those plastic covers), and it's required at the track the white Miata was mine and the black one is my friend's, we both got it at the same time but he installed his roll bar soon before I did.. notice how short is the OEM roll bar vs the proper roll bar on the right, with the helmet it barely clears with stock seats ..it's a no brainer for any convertible cars no matter what others say ![]()

That's a proper roll bar on the right?

yes there is no way the OEM would pass the broom test so I got the same exact roll bar (double hoop) since it looks more "OEM" and the wind blocker works with little trimming,
AFAIK some organizations mandate single hoop rollbar , supposedly in case of rollover double hoop type may dig in.. luckily none of us had to test that to see if it's true

So in the event of a being rear ended or some other frontal collision, you don't see any safety issue with your head possibly snapping back and hitting the taller aftermarket roll bar? Stock ones are fine since they're so low, it's a non issue.
I'm all for roll bars, but unless you're on the track with a helmet, I wouldn't drive the car without some type of padding on the bar. |

No it's not, you may pass the broom stick test, but see if NASA/SCCA will approve it for HPDE/TT. That's why the only "proper" roll-bar (for the NC) is this crazy monstrosity from Flyin' Miata. https://www.flyinmiata.com/nc-transformer-roll-bar.html The other types sold (like what you have pictured) don't have proper support for the hoops. |
