Well considering I am one of the handfull of Rear Mount Turbos I kept the car closer to factory distribution then anyone else. I still have no problem with an Extra 60 up front. I have no doubt the car will change a little but not enough to worry over all the fun I will be having knowing there are not issues that TSB's exist for with no real fixes that can just happen over and over.
To each their own, mine is already under the knife the parts are being sold off, it's a done deal.

I think there's 60lbs difference between the two engines, and people aren't taking into consideration all the rest of the stuff.

Yeah the transmission makes up a bit of the weight. That car I think has a T56 which is around 135lbs. The stock 86 transmission is maybe half that at best? It seriously doesn't weigh anything.

his car has 17x9.5 2 piece wheels with good sized drag radials in the rear, plus it had a full blown kit previously. so from what it was before the swap it is roughly 60lbs more now.

Very interesting thread and get's an itch going for another project! =) I blew my engine (hole from a piston rod) a while back and had FullBlown build a new block w/ a flex fuel kit.
(Referring to LS swap) First off, that's pretty sick. I would think the total weight shouldn't be too much of an issue when doing a large swap project. I honestly think the weight would be beneficial to the car's performance/handling, especially for being light and not AWD. But I don't race; I'd rather have a fun and challenging project than the fame and glory of a win. Can't wait to see what choices you make and how your projects goes, Cross. Best of luck!! Oh, and if you need some FA20 parts instead let me know. I still have an engine wiring harness, cams (6K miles), two stock clutches (looking new), and various engine parts from my rebuild.

Makes me feel much better knowing I only spent 4k more. I bet she is a beast ! I just maid the intial payment of 16k for engine and kit the rest for labor and car pickup will be paid on delivery. I also did my own engine and tranny removal.

There is a reason people have been putting LS engines in all kinds of FR import cars for years. FC/FD RX7s, 2nd/3rd gen Supras, Miatas. They make a lot of torque/HP, are fairly reliable, and parts for them are plentiful and cheap since there are so many around. In a few years the 86 is probably going to be one of the most popular LS swap cars IMHO. There will be almost PnP kits to do it I'm sure.
I think it would be cool to stick one of the new Mustang EcoBoost 2.3L engines in an 86, but it's an inline 4 and looks too tall. That engine has forged everything inside and is going to make a ton of power when tuned. |
