i don't think for the money you can get a better fwd 'sporty' car than the civic si. wife just sold her 2011 and it was a hoot but fwd is fwd when comes compared to a true sports car and for me, fwd is not fun.

enjoy your new car and don't have any regrets, the si is a great purchase and btw holds its resale value very well.

No, but you do get to say they're both better than the Civic Si

Regardless of the Civic SI cost or performance I would never own one because they are so damn ugly. Every time I see one I just shudder at the ugliness they project.

To me a Civic SI is just another Civic with some factory upgrades. Any car maker can add suspension and a bigger engine to their family sedan and call it a sports car. I'd rather buy a FT86 designed for performance and upgrade it myself. That's why I didn't buy a Mustang, because I didn't want to be cruising a GT just to look over at a stop light and see grandma driving the stripped down base model V6.

The FT86 is not a high production model, like Civics, Accords, Camrys, Mustangs and all the other "one size fit's all" models car makers are churning out.
To be fair, the K24 engine is pretty awesome with gobs of smooth torque throughout the rev range. It felt pretty strong in my test drive when I took a SI out.

But yeah, the Civic didn't do that special emotional thing that the BRZ did when I took it out for a spin. Although for someone who needs something practical (like say... has a kid, for instance), a BRZ probably isn't an awesome choice as a DD.

Honda does make very nice engines. I have to give the edge there to the Civic. But otherwise, it is a soulless grocery getter IMO. Prior to my FR-S, I've driven nothing but Hondas for 22 years. I went in to get an Si after my Fit was totaled, but I just couldn't see myself happy in it, Especially after test drove the FR-S.

So uh, what happens if/when Toyota/Subaru put out a higher performance version?

The Mustang was a bad example for the point I was trying to make.

But what the Mustang does highlight is the high volume, countless trim models car makers are pouring out. You cant drive a city block without seeing some kind of Mustang, and most of them are the $20k base model that's an embarrassment to pony cars. Yeah the GT500 or GT350 are pretty sweet cars, but to most people they're just another $20k Mustang. Just like the SI to most is still just another boring Civic you see everywhere.

The FT86 is not a high volume car, probably never will, and the current model has exceptional handling and performance. If they ever do make a higher HP/performance variant it wont hurt the base model's appeal or capabilities as a sport coupe. Kinda like WRX vs STI, both are great performance cars. Lots of people buy WRX's because they are happy with it's performance, or with the intent of upgrading them on their own as opposed the the features the STI possess. A STI or TRD version of the FT86 would be great to see.

I traded in my 12 Si for the FR-s. It was the 3rd Si my wife and I had owned and of the 7 years we owned them not one day was spent in the shop for something breaking. However once I took a test drive in the FR-S I was hooked. I have had several people ask me what the heck is that little red car? No on ever asked me what the civic was. I never did any modding to any of the Civics. But I look forward to doing some changes to this car. Bill

Funny you should mention that, my wife and I were recently talking about a replacement car for her in a year or so (her current car is an 07 Matrix XRS) and we agreed she should have something AWD as we live on a hill in an area of town that doesn't have plow service in the winter. She mentioned looking at a WRX to replace her Matrix. Never in my life have I been so proud.
