Worse case scenario? A car with a lot of potential but Toyota and Subaru will equally screw it up. Toyota tries to make it into something it shouldn't be (a four door, soft top, etc) and Subaru doesn't know what to do with it. If subie drops a bigger motor, more expensive parts into it thus making it too expensive for a lot of buyers. Both scenarios kill the frs/brz. Seems a lot of people think this platform was a short term thing from the get go although I would like to see them both around for a three or four gens. Only time will tell but I don't regret my purchase.

The Miata sold 45k in its first year, according to Wikipedia, and 95,640 in its first full year of production. The twins cannot even hold a candle to that.

Without some form of FI this car will not be around for a second generation. It is just that simple. People will get bored of this car too quickly otherwise. There are a lot of people who aren't willing to put aftermarket FI on a NA motor and risk the consequences.

As odd as it sounds. I would be completely fine with the twin never having a second generation. The aftermarket is HUGE already, the car has a cult following, and my resale value is dropping fast. I need the car to be rare
![]() ![]() I agree with @shaunsweeney on this one. The lack of power on these cars turn a lot of people away. |

They all sell well at first, then drop off rapidly because they are niche cars or toys. People will always need work trucks and family sedans, so the F150 and Camry/Corolla will always sell. |

If I really needed sedan or hatch, I would get WRX. The only variation than makes sense is turbo/SC for manual transmission. It will allow to keep price under $30K.

Yep, still far behind. Still, great sales, more than they forecasted. I don't know global twin sales.
My point is, the twins are not a phenomenon like the NA Miata. It's a great car that I love, but it's not some miracle from on high or massive revival of what everybody misses and loves. It's a moderate revival of what everybody misses and loves. ![]() |

I think you would be surprised how well sedan version of the 86 would sell especially for Toyota. Not so much for subaru due top the imprezza. That's where the partnership becomes problematic. Toyota needs this more than subaru does performance wise and subaru needed it more technology wise.
For those reasons I don't see this car going anywhere more than a second gen with FI and then the way of the dodo. |

The FRB can't be compared to the Miata's first year. The car market was way different in 1989 when the Miata was revealed (along with the NSX) at the Chicago Auto Show. It was one of the few or only small, 2 seat convertibles at the time. It made quite a splash. More than 900,000 Miatas later FRB goes up against many sports cars. We'll see how it does. If keeps winning awards and racking up praise it should do well enough and draw average sport car/car buyers. Being down on power compared to other cars its class doesn't help. As does being dropped from Car and Drivers 10 Best list.
