New topic (I assume..)... I'm looking for some cheap timing options for HDPE days, emphasis on 'cheap'. I don't need world class gear - just something reasonably and repeatably accurate. I don't have a smartphone so, no GPS gear. Are there inexpensive transponders/receivers available for this, or am I stuck with pushing buttons on my wristwatch? TBH, I normally don't mind that so much but my last event was in the rain and there was a lot of standing water, so my focus was on keeping the car between the walls, not on fumbling around for a button on my watch...lol.

Cheapest is use what you got. In this case, a watch.

You can buy old smart phone for $50 or less, and use that.

Wonder how well this would work...15 meters isn't very far, but the transmitter could be set on top of the outside pit wall, or any wall close to the track I suppose..

I change tranny and diff fluids at the end of every track season. For me that works out to be about 15,000 miles and 12 track days.

What kind of diff are you on, and what fluid do you use? Any other diff modifications?

Unless you're cooking the fluid, every 5 track days would be considered very conservative.

What's the latest word on running old cars (April 2012 build date to be exact) on the track, in regards to reliability?

Planning to start with an OFT stage 1 tune and an oil cooler. Are these enough to keep my car relatively safe (stock engine, aside from possibly headers as well)?

Get a newer car if able.

If not, what can I expect/what can I further do to make the car bulletproof? I plan on doing regular track days + some time attack (don't need an endurance build, just enough for 15-20 min sessions max).

Replace your entire powertrain with a 14+ powertrain, but it'll cost you more to do that, then to just get a newer car.

At the risk of rehashing old/well-known content, will you elaborate?

You responded pretty strongly with a sentiment to get a newer car. I thought I heard (but I'm not an expert) that later 2013 cars included fixes. Is there any 2013 that would be acceptable? If so, how would I recognize a 2013 that was built late enough?

I was under the impression that the early build date 2013s suffered from a few things that were fixed. Are these the problems that make you recommend a 2014+? Are there additional things I'm missing?
  • Weak TOB (aside: was this ever fixed? when?)
  • Coil packs prone to heat problems (again, when was this fixed, if ever?)
  • Fuel filler hose internal collapse
  • Moisture intrusion into taillights (though I wouldn't expect this to cause a problem on track)
I am hoping to get a twin at some point and want to make sure I get the best fit for my intended use. Thanks for the info!
