I do notice my car can keep the high idle longer in the winter than summer, on startup. In the summer, high & loud idle only last 30 secs top. When the temps are freezing, the loudness from the high idle may go away, but the idle stays above 1200rpm for much longer.

so disabling the retarded timing during warm up, can actually cause the car to be louder, and idle above 2000 rpm. what are peoples thoughts on this?

Does the timing change cause this car to take so long to warm up? I haven't owned a car that is so slow to warm up in 20 years, its almost ridiculous.

No, retarding the timing combined with late start of injection are used to light off the cat by dumping burning fuel into the exhaust. It only lasts as long as the initial high idle on cold start.

It does not warm up any slower than any other car i have had in the last decade including evo Viii, evo X, Ralliart sportback, X3, E36 M3, etc etc. It may be that the coolant gauge is calibrated so it does not move until the temps are higher than some other cars, but it seems to warm up the same to me.

My car idles at 900 rpm from a cold start in the single digit (5 degreees F), is that not normal? maybe explain the long warm up time? The car is 100% stock.

Looking at water temps on torque, it seems the dash water temp needle is pretty accurate - rises linearly with actual degrees and doesn't get to "fully warm" until temps hit ~190.

And I notice the same thing regal does - car takes forever to warm up, 2-3x longer than all my other vehicles (GD WRX, GR STI, F150, etc)

So why do some cars idle at 1200, others 900 rpm? And some cars take 20 minutes to warm up?

One of the reasons I bought a 4 cylinder was expecting quick warm up, I'm using 0w20 and 100% stock. Should she go to the dealer?
