Wow! Looks like bearing failure which lead to binding. My non-professional observation.

Sounds like a lack of maintenance / poor product design.

I tried my hardest to keep these bearings clean, trust me. I worked them over a few times

Then I must say poor product design, these bearing looks decades old. I would sounds like these would need a yearly inspection and tons of bearing grease to keep them happy. Check your other coilovers, this is quite alarming.

They have sealed bearings now I believe.. this wasnt offered when I purchased them. Both front coilovers are being sent out for inspection and new bearings. I'll see what they cover as far as cost

Did they come completely assembled?

I think FA generally only recommends using those bearings on a race vehicle and not one exposed to the elements. They have a different radial bearing mount which is sealed, not sure how long that's been the case.

Yes they were completely assembled, as I stated in the previous post the ONLY bearings offered when I purchased them were these. The sealed bearings were not out yet. The bearings were recommended to me despite me stating that the car sees weather

For reference, every component that goes into an "exposed" location of a General Motors vehicle undergoes "Salt Exposure" testing. This involves 20+ days of heat, humidity, and a daily spray of salt solution. If any red rust is present, the component fails.

The goal of this and other testing is to mimic the wear observed in "durability vehicles" that have been driven 100,000 miles in the worst conditions.

Does Fortune Auto have a quality assurance procedure to prove out parts before using them? I would think that their operation is "mass production" enough to require it.

I can definitely say no strut should ever shear like that even at it's weakest point (the strut to camber plate attachment). That has to be a manufacturing or arguably a material defect, seeing it should bend rather than snap off.

I can only imagine how damn scary that shit must of been at highway speeds...

Scary shit

Do they still use those "exposed bearings"? ...I believe I read that they use some sort of plastic/poly bearings currently as Standard (ie: when not choosing the optional radial bearing).

In any case...I wonder if it's just a rare occurrence and/or a faulty part (maybe metal quality failure).

I have seen other brands (with a google search) with the same problem - top thread area and nut sheared off on the shaft. It seems like it happens to all brands and is sort of common probability; but, more of a rare type failure. It even happens to "top tier" super high quality and expensive brands - Penske, Tein, Koni and Bilstein...as follows:

The "top tier" brands:

And some of the cheaper "generic" brands:

That is not very reassuring... they all have the same point of failure.
