OFT Stage 2 Tune comparable to stock 02-07 wrx?
Might sound like a stupid question, but I'm just wondering. I plan to go with the OFT stage 2 running Tomei EL Headers.
I know this setup gives you roughly 20whp..so like 24hp? "Catless header with tune (petrol) around 20 wheel hp" So, let's for the sake of it just say the FRS now is 200hp, it will be at 220hp. Playing in the factor of weight, would this car be comparable to a lets say, stock 2002 wrx which had 227hp? I'm just asking because when i first bought my wrx it was stock and i loved the power of it for daily driving. Just wondering if stage 2 would be comparable to that? If so I'd be very happy

Stock WRXs of that vintage dynoed at around 175WHP/180lb-ft of torque.
Our stock power/weight is already comparable to WRXs of that vintage. They obviously don't feel the same, because WRXs have torque where we don't and builds its power in a lump, rather than linearly. |

I still think the wrx would have quite an advantage over us

the wrx will still smoke you as its producing more power and torque earlier in rpm range and its easier to drive in its power band ,wheras we have to wait till 6000 and above for max power
and you still wont have that turbo rush of torque\power in midrange only FI is going to produce that but tune with headers is way better than stock with the big torque hole arround 4000 , E85 is better again |

And ours will still be more fun. Despite being slower/less powerful.

Most of the EJ 2l WRX's made 160hp to the wheels, which is just about the same as us. They do make a lot more torque as has been mentioned. My BRZ was making 200whp before I got rid of it and I would say it was faster than a stock 02-05 WRX. My friend has a completely stock WRX engine in his 00 2.5RS and we switched cars back and forth and at speed the BRZ pulled away. Obviously the WRX got the jump at first. Also the specs listed above for the 07 WRX are not relevant because that car has the 2.5l that was highly underrated. Those cars were very close to STI's in terms of power.

Thanks everyone for your helpful input!
Yeah i understand that most likely the subaru would feel quicker because of the tq and turbo but wanted to get a idea if it would be near that. Either way, looks like I'll be a happy boy with stage 2

Mr.Impreza: after all if one lusts for power, FI can be addded added to ft86s too. Actually imho main distinquishing trait should be how much practicallity one needs to have out of car, if it's the only one, as that cannot be changed with some upgrades. If that's not important due family situation or due having other cars for cases where need to haul more stuff/people arises, then though WRX vs FT86 lie close overall just with wins at different areas, my preferences lie to FT86 as bringing more RWDish driving fun (and though maybe not as significant but looks also won my heart). But if i had kids and only one car, i probably would be driving WRX now.

I think our cars have closer to a 20% loss, but I agree it would be interesting to see. I wonder if a more 'fair' comparison would be if the 86 was using a UEL header?
Denis I tried to reply to your PM but my computer is acting up. I'm not sure which one would be better. Sorry

'02-'05 WRX were quite a bit less powerful since it has the 2.0 motor - the '06-07 had the 2.5. On paper it made about the same power but in reality the 2.5 is a lot faster than the 2.0.
Either way, the BRZ on the highway is as fast or faster than the 2.0 - consider the lighter weight, less drivetrain loss, shorter gearing with a higher rev limit, and better aero. I would think a Stage 2 BRZ could keep up or be faster than a stock '06-07 from a roll. I had an '06 WRX, and have Stage 2 BRZ, and while the torque hit harder in the WRX, I feel like BRZ is practically as quick or quicker in some situations. Obviously from a dig the WRX as AWD and torque and should crush a BRZ. |

I would agree I also owned a 07 WRX that I traded for the BRZ. My quarter mile times for both at stage II canned tunes: WRX: 13.7 @ 100 BRZ (e85): 14.3 @ 97 WRX stock was around 14.5 @ 96. So comparable. The torque difference was substantial and on the street the WRX felt faster, but the quarter mile doesn't lie. |
