Dealership wants maintenance in my 51km BRZ

Hi, Good day!

I'm sorry for this dumb question, This is my first time to own a brand new car. So please, respect my post.

My BRZ had 35km on the odometer when I got it last month (November 11) and since I'm busy lately I just rolled 16km (51km in total) Haha!

They charged me $120 to change oil, filter, gasket, brake cleaner, misc.
So, I need help your help guys if I will do what they offer to me.
(Also, I cant see a reason to maintenance it so early since my manual said 1,600km break in period.)

By the way, thanks to everyone who helped me to choose between Auto and Manual. I didn't regret a single thing in my Manual BRZ!

Sorry about my bad English, just let me know if you did not understand something and I will explain it better.

You do not have to go to the dealer for maintenance. That's just another way they make money.
You have 3 options,
Do it yourself.
Take it to any general mechanic.
Let the dealership do it.

If your lucky and have the space and tools you can do every scheduled maintenance yourself.

If you don't want to pay dealership prices go to a general mechanic. They are far less cheaper.

Personally, I would only take it for warranty fixes. I can do pretty much everything. A quick YouTube vid can show you how to do most everything. However if your not mechanically inclined or not up to the task, take out your wallet and pay someone to do it for you.

Do what the manual says 8000km,16000km, you shouldn't need to go for at least six months and still maintain the warranty agreement.

Wow.

Follow the guidance in the owner's manual. And be very cautious in your future visits to this dealership.

Dealer recommended oil change after 3 weeks, 16 kms from new??

That's the most ridiculous story I have read here lately. And you went for it!?

I'd say the service dept did their job if you actually went in to do a service, you are a grownup and should know better. Service writer, right or wrong, gets paid to write service. In fact I woudnt be surprised if the dealer had contacted you to come in accidentally from a database error.

Dont blame the dealer for not educating you on car maintenance. You make the decisions. In fact I"d be embarassed for being so naive not to question them.

Hi everyone!

Thank you for your time to help me.

I refused to what they are offering me for now and told them I will get my first maintainance after I got near in my break in period.

And I also decided that after my first maintainance I will be staying away from that dealership and start to working on my car since I am eager to learn more in these kind of stuffs.

Thank you everyone for helping me again!

Hi!

Indeed, I'm surprised when they called me that my car is needed a maintainance when I just got it from the dealership.

In fact, I'm just curious since this is my "first time" to own a brand new car, and wanted some help from guys in this forum since you guys know better from these cars.

I'm just taking extra precaution since I'm still in the break in process and also this is my first time breaking in a car and dont want to messed up

Also, I'm done reading the manual and decided stick to it and gonna stay away from this dealership since I feel they will do more harm than good. Im not saying they are bad, but I just lose confidence trusting my car to them because of this.

By the way, thank you for your assistance!

best plan of action is to follow the car manual and check with the service advisor before they take your can in to see what work they will do

i'm going in for my 30,000 miles service this weekend and my 2 year free maintenance expired but i have a free oil and oil filter change so i will go to them but tell them i don't want them to touch my intake filter, cabin filter, don't rotate the tires...this way they will only charge me for the brake fluid flush and do their required inspections

My FR-S is my sixth new car.

I've always ignored the maintenance schedule except for oil changes.

I sold my 1977 Subaru DL for $1100 at 135k miles. Counting all maintenance, insurance, etc. the car cost me six cents a mile to drive. That is cheaper than a bicycle today.

My 1980 Buick Skylark was such a lemon I sold it after 11 months, vowing to never again own a GM product.

My 2001 Chrysler 300m was retired at 185k miles a little over 3 years ago. I did a lot of brake jobs on that car for some reason. 35k was the average. I replaced the spark plugs at 125k miles because the old ones were so hard on my coils that I blew a coil.

2006 Scion xB is at 184k miles and going strong. I changed the plugs at 110k miles and replaced the front brakes at the same time. It may need new drums in the rear. I might do it this spring.

My 2013 FRS has 111,000 miles on it. I've gone through six sets of tires (I commute pretty fast on the backroad twisties of KY with no other cars or cops). I just bought plugs and will replace them in the spring. I don't want to blow a coil again. The brakes are about ready to be replaced too.

The 2016 Scion iA only has 14k on it, so it doesn't apply here.

All that said, I've never replaced any fluid or oil in any of those cars except for motor oil. The exception would be things like replacing water pumps, which includes flushing out the coolant system. I've also never done that with any of the used cares I've owned. I've owned 26 cars in my life.
