In the market for a BRZ. Advice?
Hey everyone,
I am in the market for a 14+ BRZ(manual). Budget is about 25k will have to finance plan to put down about 5k. Would prefer to get one under 20k if possible though. And what is a good price on a used one with reasonable miles? located in the southeast. I do plan on modifying the car. My main concern is the issue with the DI seals burning up/blowing out. I read through the entire DI seal poll thread.. Is this still a problem happening with the 14+ or was this just a first model year issue? Any and all buying advice is appreciated Thanks. The issue was fixed with a ROM update, as it was a tune problem. If you're worried, bring the car by the dealer to have any available TSB's worked on before you start your mods.

You should be able to find a low mileage 2014 for under $20k pretty easily.

Go to cars.com. Be willing to travel and you can get a great deal. Some dealers just cannot move these cars at all.

You can get a new 2016 BRZ for about $25k (before TTL).
2014+ BRZ can be bought easily for under $20k. Should be easy to get under $18-19k if you are willing to travel a little bit. If you are flexible and the car doesn't have to be a BRZ, you can get a used FRS for $15k-16k (with clean record) pretty easily if you are willing to travel. Btw, iirc transport of a car cross country costs about $1k or under so that's something you might want to consider when buying your car. Good luck. |

Go used if you plan to mod right away. With that budget, it might be worth going new, but the warranties are a factor for any modding.

It seems like all the dealers close to me are listing them for above MSRP/book value.
Would it be worth citing kbb or nada or msrp(if new) to the dealer and being firm on not paying more? Or are they likley to blow this off. Or am I better off going out of state to find one listed at a fair price? |

Updated tune showed up on cars built in the spring of '13, guarantee that '14s have the factory fix, who knows if it's the right long term fix but cases died down really really quick, I haven't seen one in months.
'14s are safe and even some '13s are safe, be willing to travel. IMO it's worth spending a few hundred bucks on airfare to fly out to the 'perfect car' and drive it home. ymmv |

I actually first saw it on cargurus.com. Try them out -- they cover the whole country, give you advice whether the deal is great or it sucks, the mileage on the ODO, how much it would cost to get the car to you, how long it has been on the lot, etc., etc. I was very happy and still am! I'll be watching for your good news!

I bought a '14 BRZ Ltd with 20k miles on it, AT, WRB, for $20,800 in Savannah, GA.
You will generally get a better price on one at a non-Subaru dealer. Mine is pristine. Only thing I've done is to add a back-up camera, $500. |

Well, if you want to get in their face a little about their MSRP Plus pricing, there's no reason you shouldn't try. But, be armed with another dealer's price you really like better, because the real price down the road will always mean more to them than any online quote, and also check cargurus.com about how many days their car has been sitting on their lot, because it can be a gauge of how eager they might be to unload it. The extra information will put confidence in your voice that they can't help but hear. If they won't fold on their price, simply tell them what you will pay for their car (and mean it), and literally walk away. Be sure they have your phone number, and when they call with a little reduction, don't hem and haw, just remind them of what you offered in person, and say thanks for calling. I know people for whom this worked -- and doing this little dance close to the end of the month always helps, too. And one more thing: there isn't much percentage in staking your ego and humanity on whether you capture that last couple hundred bucks, right? Always remember that you will find a beautiful BRZ that is the perfect car for you, whether it's on that dealer's lot or somebody else's. Good Luck to you! David.

My only advice is buy the Sport Tech (sorry, forget what it's called in the States). The prices are pretty much the same, and you get so much more with the equipped model.

For a MY2014, if you want one that has the revised nuts and bolts for the suspension and engine mount, go for one made from November 2013 and onwards (you can verify this on the Subaru parts computer). IIRC the ROM update was done since April 2013. |
