DIY 1st86 CF "Picture Frame"

I had mentioned some time ago I was thinking of converting my CF "Limited Edition" License plate frame into a picture frame for my office.

Finally got around to doing it. Here's a rough guide on what I did.

I have the "good fortune" of not needing my front license plate mount, which was in the trunk of my car. If you don't have one, well, you'll need to modify accordingly!

What you'll need:
  1. 1st86 CF License Plate Frame
  2. License Plate Bracket and hardware
  3. A photo of your car either cut to fit, or printed on a license plate. I ordered mine from BUILDASIGN.COM for $15. It took a while to get because I opted not to pay their "expedited shipment" fees.
  4. Some picture hanger wire and one picture hook.

First, take one of the extra clip on mounting hooks and run the end of the picture frame wire through the screw hole and out the end. Wrap it back around and tie off.

Place this hook on the inner holes on the top of the frame, measure the wire across, leaving enough room for slack for hanging and for tieing off. Then, attach the wire to the second license hook.

And tie off. You'll want to leave a little slack in the line to match the hook you plan to use for hanging.

On the CF frame, CAREFULLY pull the two "limited edition" stickers from the back and apply to the front of the frame. This is optional and may depend on how well yours are sticking. Mine were practically falling off, so they lifted right up. They stick much better to the front. (ADDED CAUTION: I tried to do this on the FR-S Pen case and when the stickers "stick" they rip apart very easily when you try to remove them, again, be VERY careful with this if you decide to attempt this step)

Now, "mount" the license plate and the CF Frame with the bolts in the hardware pack for the frame. (I plan to replace these with some nicer ones, but didn't have anything else on hand).

...and viola! a limited edition, FR-S 1st86 license frame.

Here it is in a temporary location being carefully "guarded" until I go back to my office next week for mounting in its permanent location.

You got swag with yours? :\ Makes me sad that Subaru has done pretty much nothing (except get the better of the two cars <3u) for promotional events. I did get a hat from the service manager at my dealer though. They were handing them out at the end of the BRZ training classes. Excuse the poor-light-front-facing-cellphone-camera picture.

The numbered carbon fiber Frame was given to all the members of the Scion 1st86 contest group when we received our cars. Look for the First 86 registry and other threads on it for more details if you want.

I do, but that's our "game room" in the basement. Has all the consoles in it and is decorated by my teenage sons with their posters from Gamestop points. There's also a couple of Dead Island posters, and a full size Gears of Wear store display.

That was a temporary location just for the photo. It actually sits in my office. See below...

Not sure. A few have sold. I still have mine, with no intentions of selling.
