Carbon Ceramic Brakes

As usual, I am 100% aware of the absurdity of this discussion (pun intended). Let's talk carbon-ceramic brakes!

Pros:
- 100,000+ mi life on the street, some types last very well on the track too
- no dust
- no noise
- stable to crazy high temperatures

Cons:
- cost ($10k - $15k)
- rotors chip easily
- rotors are larger
- few manufacturers available

Has anyone considered them for 86 usage?

How it's made:

Main manufacturers are:
Surface Transforms - supplies Alcon, Stoptech, Mov'It, and Stillen
SGL - teamed up with Brembo LINK

These guys have a cost-effective solution that I'm curious about:
Turbine Brake Rotors

Stoptech was exploring a carbon rotor that would fit our ST-40 calipers, but it appears the Gen 2 units never took off.

Brembo has multiple carbon rotor options. See page 50 of this LINK. I'm curious if their 355mm discs will work with the 355mm kit that's widely available for the BRZ. I'm sure you'd need to get the right hat and mounting setup.

They even developed a kit for the BMW 1M Coupe, which isn't THAT much larger or sportier than the 86. LINK

Similarly, they developed a kit for the Camaro Z28: LINK

I'm drooling over the thought of fade-free, maintenance-free, 1.5 g stopping power.

What are your thoughts?

Poor Man's McLaren MP4-12C?

Still not a valid argument, I'm afraid.

I'm trying to learn about the tech and start some dialog. If manufacturers are providing small car options for the 1M Coupe and Camaro Z28, it's fair to assume they are considering the twins.

Fiscally irresponsible 86 owners may appreciate the upgrade for their Stoptech or Brembo calipers.

Carbon ceramic brakes are not very good for day to day use. They are, however, incredibly awesome on high performance applications. The statement, "warming up your brakes," is pretty important for them to work well. There are only a few brake pad compounds that are compatible with carbon ceramic rotors and are essential to maintaining the life of the rotor. On top of that, brake pads are still a huge function of what type of driving you will be doing. We have had multiple clients asking for carbon ceramic brakes, however, all of them have opted out of the option. What are you exactly looking for?

There was a video of two Aston Martins, one was a GT3 car and the other was a production car. The production car has carbon ceramics while the GT3 has steel brakes, guess which one was preferred? Felt the best? Had the best feel? Stopped the best?

Very poor pun.

As stated, discarding the expensive part of Carbon Ceramics... is there another emerging technology in brakes?

J-hook floating rotors like the Essex AP Endurance kit is pretty amazing. Brembo's GT-R and Baer offer zinc coating on the rotor and easy access to the pads.

I agree ! I couldnt stress how much you need to warm your brakes and how do i know that ? Lets say i had a supercar stuck behind a 4x4 once. Another thing is people think you car is broken once it warms up as the squeak.

Somehow I ended up reading a thread on a Ferrari forum. The guy said he had a minor accident that borke his wheel and in turn damaged one of his carbon ceramic discs. He took the car to Ferrari dealer who in turn told him they would repair the car but ONLY if he replaced the discs at all 4 corners. The price for all that and his other (minor; wheel and tire) was ~50k

Not sure how true or if it was a complete troll, but I think I'll stay away from carbon ceramics until I'm 10k a day CEO status.

It would probably cost 30k for a complete set from brembo. That's the cost of it for the E9x M3.

The market would be very small (or close to none) for this type of modification to an entry level sports car.
