Differential Strength Component
So maybe I'm not using the right terminology but I'm just looking for clarification.
Our rear end is a weak point. I'm trying to decide on the best route for upgrades. Looking at 800whp+. The routes currently are the FullBlown 8.8 Ford rear end conversion or upgraded axles/gears in the diff. My question is, the axles and gearset are the strength of the rear end, correct? The differential casing is just a protective housing... mostly. Is that an accurate statement? |

Not at the power levels you're describing.
All that torque is transferred to the wheels by reaction against the diff housing. One significant advantage to IRS is being able to bolt that diff firmly to the chassis. Live axles bend and twist and jump around under all that torque. One of the biggest issues with carbon fibre transmission cases developed for F1 was engineering the structure so it would not twist and pop the bearings. The diff case is a very specialized casting designed to hold all the bearings and seals precisely aligned while that torque is directed at 90 degrees. |

I'm curious about the Ford 8.8 rear end. Is it an independent setup, or straight axle?
