Reports claim Toyota is working on an open-top version of its affordable sports car.
Toyota is readying itself for a topless stoush with Mazda.
The Japanese brand has confirmed to German magazine Autobild it is developing a drop-top version of its upcoming 86 coupe - a car that would be directly targeted at Mazda's popular MX-5.
"The [86] was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible," Toyota's chief engineer for the 86 coupe, Tetsuya Tada, told Autobild.
There's no further word on when the car will make it to production, but reports on car enthusiast sites suggest it could make its motor show debut as early as 2013.
Toyota hasn't had a convertible sports car since the MR2 was withdrawn from sale in 2006. The 86 is part of a plan by the company to shed its image as a conservative car maker and hark back to its sportier roots, which included the 2000GT, the Supra and the Celica.
The confirmation of a convertible version of the 86 also raises the possibility of an open-top version of its sister car, the Subaru BRZ.
There have been rumours of a convertible BRZ for a while, but according to Subaru Australia's head of public relations, David Rowley, that will be a game of wait-and-see.
"We're not aware of anything along those lines," he says, but suggested there may be news on a BRZ convertible from Japan in the future.
The coupe version of the 86 is due to arrive in Australia in June this year, with pricing expected to start from about $35,000.

Subaru's BRZ will also go on sale mid-year.

so i'm assuming top model will be 40 to 43ish including on road cost.

I went in to my local dealership on the weekend, and that's what they told me to expect. Around $45k for the 'Stage 2 model' (as he described it) drive away.

if 45k gets you higher spec (nav, leather, etc) than a similar priced WRX then its a good deal.

$45k drive away for top spec is a reasonable deal (rather than good) in my book and absolutely max i'd spend on one.

i hope Subaru releases a mid spec (JDM Spec S) for like $42k drive away as i don't need the leather/suede and sat nav.

The poor salesman's manager was standing over his shoulder during the whole conversation.

The manager kept telling me that even for $50k I'd be hard pressed to find a better car. lol. I made it very clear that I thought otherwise and that $45k was close to the max I was prepared to pay.

Now I'm considering putting down a deposit on the condition that the drive away price is max $45k else I can pull my deposit. Both salesman and manager agreed that it was reasonable so I'm still deciding whether it's a worthwhile course of action.

Note: I should mention that I am talking about the Toyota, not Subaru.

When i put my pre order in, i didn't need to put down a max price.

basically it's subject to the final pricing and finance. if i'm not happy with the price, i can walk away with my deposit back.

I'll make sure to let them know that if/when I put down my deposit. When I asked, the manager didn't seem too pleased with the idea of giving my deposit back. I can understand why. =P

the sales i ordered from was fine. he said they will have limited cars so if i don't want it it's fine for him as he can sell to someone else.

he said upfront (without me asking) that the deposit is refundable. I also asked him to put the finance condition in as a backup clause to pull out if i want to.

i was the first person to order from this dealer but i won't be the first owner as he said the first 2 cars they are getting is orange and dark blue while i want a white so i will have to wait for it to arrive.

WTF is this guy on drugs or something.

Even in Oz 50k will get you alot of car.

I suggest if the salesman talks like this take your money elsewhere.

Could you share the suburb this dealer is in so i know not too go there.

It was his manager, not the actual salesman. I'm quite young so maybe he thought he could get away with it.

I went to Chatswood Toyota (it's currently located at Crows Nest due to renovations) but like I said, I had no problem with the actual salesman. He was actually quite nice.
