How to tell Engine's Operating Temp?

So, I'm used to having an oil gauge in a track car. Once it starts creeping into 250 - 260 oil temps I usually try to take it easy, etc.

For those that do HPDEs with your BRZ, how do you monitor / gauge the engine's temperature, short of just looking at the water temp?

I've never seen my Aim Solo DL read more than 183*F while driving on track. I only drive a max of 6 laps or so each session depending on how long the course is. I do wish it read oil temp as well as it is a better indication of how the engine is doing.

I'm using Torque Android app with a custom PID for oil temp. Check out the link for more info http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...=23530&page=15

The max ECT my solo has logged on track is 187F. It appears that coolant temp is not an issue with these cars, so you don't need to worry too much about it. Oil temp is another issue, and is under debate

I think Perrin said that they saw the engine start to lose power at an oil temp of 230F. I think we need to account for our thin stock oil when considering optimum temperature.
