Muffler selection...

I know, I make and comment on a lot of exhaust posts; sorry about that >.<

I think I've narrowed things down. I'm pretty sure I'm only going to do the axle-back section, and I want to go with either a Magnaflow 12266, or a Flowmaster 80 series. I'll probably ask the shop to reuse the stock piping for the tips as well (To save a little money), then go with something a little larger for the actual tips, probably 3.5".

Now, the question is: Magnaflow or Flowmaster?

I've used Flowmaster in the past, and I like the "hollow" type of sound they make. However, the Flowmaster catback I on the FR-S has a pretty unpleasant overtone. But, that was a full 2.5" catback with no resonator. Keeping the factory plumbing and resonator might kill some of that overtone I didn't like.

Then there's the Magnaflow that I know sounds pretty decent (At least from what I've heard here), but isn't quite the sound I think I'd really like. The Flowmaster just seems to have more personality to me. The Flowmaster is almost certainly going to be a good bit lighter too since it's not full of packing.

What do we think? I can never make up my mind when it comes to exhaust (Since I can't really afford to redo it if I get it wrong), and I need another perspective on things.

^^based on what you said simce you like the sound of the flowmaster but concerned about being to loud because for not having a resonator and i think you want to have a exhaust set up for less, my suggestion look for a decent muffler shop in your area, and fabricate your exhaust piping with a resonator, used the flowmaster mufgler that you like, that way its cheaper and you get what you want
Hope that helps

If you're going to change it anyway it's worth just chopping the muffler out entirely and seeing if you like it. It's really easy to do on this car and it honestly sounds pretty good with just the straight track pipe. If you're into appearances you can just cut it and weld in a y pipe and re-use the stock tips. If you or a friend can weld it costs pretty much nothing.

And then if you hate the way it sounds just add whatever muffler you were going to buy anyway.

It's 2.5" pipe from the cat back with a Magnaflow 12266 muffler and 2.25" out the tailpipe with a 3.5" tip. I don't have any underside pics yet.

Any chance of a drive-by or pull clip? Normally I wouldn't ask, but that IS one of the setups I'm contemplating, so I am VERY curious
