Quite smelly exhaust after header install + OFT Stage 2+ tune

Aside from the header, which is a JDL uncatted UEL, I have a completely stock exhaust all the way back.

I know that since I removed a cat that my exhaust might get a bit smelly, and with the OFT Stage 2+ tune I know that my engine would be consuming fuel differently.

However, what I didn't expect, was that my car's exhaust would get so smelly.

I have a pretty enclosed single car garage, and if I reverse into it, the smell is almost too much.

Is this a problem with the tune? I am fairly sure there's no exhaust leak. It seems to be running extremely rich.

Uncatted exhaust is pretty gross smelling. While it's possible you're running rich, you should be able to verify that with the OFT. A significant change in smell is normal though. If you run E85, it will smell very sweet. Much more pleasant.

Follow-up question - how bad for my health is running this? When reversing into the garage, the smell completely takes over and lingers for quite a while, even with the garage open.

Well it's not good for you. But it wasn't good for you before, just harder to notice. There are more chemical compounds in the exhaust floating around your garage than there were before, which is what you're smelling. For the few seconds your breathing it, I'm confident you'll be ok. But you really have to decide for yourself how much "risk" you're comfortable with. I consider it a "cost of having a racecar" so it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't stand around in the garage with the car running though

Don't idle in your garage before leaving. As well, if you are worried about health I'd suggest putting a header on with a high flow cat. As for the lingering oder, thars just part of it. The harmful gasses usually dissipate pretty quickly so long as theirs proper venting.

One of the perks of E85. It’ll still kill you, but you’ll enjoy the odor.

If I had to guess, there is likely slightly less chemical agents in e85 exhaust than gasoline. So it's less likely to give you lung cancer in 60 years

Based on the dynamometer data, the average difference in tailpipe emissions for E85 versus gasoline is -23% for NOx, -30% for CO, and no significant difference for hydrocarbons (HC)

You won't die as fast if you decide to take a nap in the car while warming it up in the garage either.

I'm not sure what it is, but manufacturers put some kind of coating on new components. Most of that will burn off after a few heat cycles. My new Borla header smelled terrible for a short time. It's barely noticable now.
